What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Accurately code inpatient conditions and procedures according to ICD guidelines and UHDDS
- Assign appropriate MS-DRG or APR-DRG for complex, multi-specialty inpatient services
- Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists to address documentation concerns
- Prepare responses to DRG validation requests and inquiries from third-party payers
- Review medical record documentation to ensure accurate coding and compliance
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Minimum educational requirement: AHIMA or AAPC approved Medical Coding Diploma or Health Information Management Degree
- Minimum of three years of progressive inpatient coding experience in an acute care facility
- Active credential of Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding guidelines
- Must not have been excluded from participation in federally funded programs
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience with electronic health record systems
- Experience in academic or level I or II trauma settings
- If AAPC credentialed, CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder) is preferred
