      GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

      Under the supervision of the Head Start Director or Designee, the Child Development Specialist is responsible to develop and insure the proper delivery of educational services to the Head Start/Early Head Start children and their families throughout the area served by Episcopal Community Services Head Start/Early Head Start; to provide training and technical assistance to Head Start/Early Head Start Program staff; to monitor and evaluate education and child development services, curriculum, classroom and home visits; to prepare annual assessments of the Educational component of Head Start/Early Head Start Programs and to do related work as required. Responsibilities include program development, training, monitoring, coaching, curriculum fidelity and evaluation. This is a Modified-Traditional position.


      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

      1. Plans, organizes, and coordinates the work of designated staff.
      2. Ensures the proper development and monitoring of education and child development services for Head Start/Early Head Start programs.
      3. Monitors the proper documentation of children’s development utilizing Child Outcomes (DRDP), weekly planning form, portfolios and CLASS observations (if applicable).
      4. Engages in cross-curriculum and participates in cross-content planning.
      5. Provides classroom environment, bi-lingual education, and enhancement of a parent’s role in the child’s developmental progress.
      6. Plans and conducts parent workshops.
      7. Conducts on-going evaluations of Head Start/Early Head Start education and child development services, including curriculum fidelity and CLASS.
      8. Provides training and coaching to Head Start/Early Head Start teaching staff.
      9. Assists with the staff professional development system of continuous improvement.

      Ability to:

      1. Implement a curriculum with a structured developmental scope and sequence. This should include plans and materials for learning experiences that are based on developmental progressions and the ways children learn.
      2. To analyze data and teach in a way that others can understand.
      3. Provide training programs and workshops for parents and Head Start/Early Head Start staff
      4. Promote parent involvement with Head Start/Early Head Start educational programs
      5. Work effectively with low-income families and parent groups.
      6. Maintain records and prepare reports to demonstrate staff outcomes through coaching.
      7. Address staff questions and concerns about program policies and functions with tact and courtesy.
      8. Communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.


      EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

      Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field (with appropriate ECE/CD units).

      Two (2) years of successful teaching, coaching or mentoring experience in a similar program assisting the Early Childhood Development of young children.

      CLASS Certification in Infant, Toddler or Pre-K or will be able to obtain certification within 3 months of hire.


      SPECIAL/OTHER:

      Excellent oral and written skills. Ability to pass a physical examination including proof of immunizations and tuberculin skin test. Fingerprint clearance, criminal record, and sex offender registry check required. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California Driver’s License is required. A good driving record of at least two (2) years duration, as evidence by freedom from multiple or serious traffic violations, license and insurance required for personal car usage.

      Seeing: Must be able to read computer screen and various reports. 75-100%

      Hearing: must have capacity to hear and discern sounds. 75-100%

      Standing/walking/sitting 50-74%

      Climbing/stooping/kneeling/ Bending/reaching 25-49%

      Fingering/grasping/feeling: Must be able to write, type, and use phone system 75-100%

      Lifting Requirement: Up to 25 pounds
