- Virtualisation services for supporting Operations, STPs and researchers in running both business-critical systems such as a variety of LIMS, data sharing services, Crick developed applications, and monitoring services as well targeted and cost-effective services to support individual areas of research, and across a number of different VM and container technologies.
- Storage to support a wide variety of functionality including for virtualisation services, as well as for confidential filesharing, research data platforms and operational logging and audit.
- Disaster Recovery including backup to ensure minimal disruption in the event of significant issues, regardless of whether they are caused by system issues, user error, building related failures or malicious attackers.
- Archiving Services to support both Research Integrity and cost-effective use of all data storage services across the organisation.
- Experience of leading on the design, maintenance and optimisation of IT infrastructure services across multiple data centres including externally managed.
- Extensive experience managing virtualisation clusters.
- Extensive experience with a variety of storage technologies including object storage, RAID, NAS, SANs, tape libraries.
- Experience managing an IBM Spectrum Protect (formally TSM) or similar environment.
- Proven track record in managing disaster recovery plans for IT Infrastructure.
- An understanding of the standards, requirements and processes for effective management of IT infrastructure services, including readiness for on-the-spot audits as required by a number of financial and other operational regulatory controls.
- Ability to manage complex services and projects effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision, a finite pool of resource, and against deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrable ability to work collaboratively and flexibly as part of a deeply technical engineering team, while still able to work directly with stakeholders to focus on research/business outcomes.
- Excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy to effectively analyse and interpret complex data and use it solve to complex technical problems quickly and effectively though leadership, delegation and the ability to deep-dive when necessary.
- Previous experience developing and supporting an enterprise environment across a multiyear roadmap including full hardware refreshes/replacement without service interruption.
- Additional domain technology expertise such as Software Engineering or Architecture
- Leading on creation and delivery of training plans and integrating them into organisational processes
- Cross-team working in a science and enterprise IT environment.
- Developing IT systems in a research environment.
- A high level of awareness of security issues in IT and methods of managing them.
- The management of risk as it relates to the team’s services.
Salary for this Role:
From £71,350 with benefits, subject to skills and experience.

This is a full-time position on Crick terms and conditions of employment.
Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the world’s leading research Institutes at a crucial time in its evolution, and play a definitive role in shaping it for the future.
The Information Technology Office (ITO) team within the Francis Crick Institute is responsible for the design, implementation and operation of all IT applications which manage the running of the institute, along with the publication and library services provided to scientists.
Within this team, this role will be responsible for the long-term strategy, planning and successful delivery of underpinning services related to IT infrastructure across multiple datacentres, including system administration, on-premises virtualisation and related storage infrastructure, as well as backup and archive services for all enterprise and research data, as well as informing and supporting our Information Security approach.
The role will lead the work to successfully roadmap, design, implement, and continually improve IT infrastructure services to the Crick operations and science community and work closely with stakeholders across the institute as well as extensively with collaborating research and commercial partner organisations. This will include operational responsibility for delivery under external managed service contracts that depend on these underpinning services, an area of rapid growth for the organisation.
Key responsibilities
These include but are not limited to:
- Defining a technology vision and roadmap for Enterprise IT Infrastructure in line with the growing and diverse needs of the Crick, to support both operations and research processes.
- The role will line manage one or more members of the Infrastructure and Cloud Systems Team and additionally matrix manage other team members, including on occasions, members of other teams, under the direction of the Director of IT Operations.
- Be responsible for the operation and continual improvement of a suite of mission critical services that underpin much of the work across all areas of the institute. These include (but are not limited to):
- Architecture, Design, Implementation and Operation of underpinning services for the IT environment and associated infrastructure.
- Working with the CISO and Chief Data Officer to ensure technology support and implementation of best data security practice and policy as applied to research working practices.
- Close working with Research Computing Platforms team to ensure effective use of tooling, including de-duplication of services where possible.
- Upskilling of individuals and teams in the use and maintenance of IT infrastructure services, including those outside of line management and from external organisations.
- Working with a wide range of both internal and external stakeholders on the development and delivery of new infrastructure services and improvements to existing.
- Representing the Crick externally at peer level and above, cultivating an extensive network, and leveraging it to create and deliver cross-institute initiatives for the benefit of Crick, including work with - and learning from - other industries to help deliver additional innovations and effective services.
