What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Interview clients and consumers to gather information and provide support
- Conduct legal research and writing to assist in advocacy efforts
- Provide counsel and advice on self-advocacy for individuals with disabilities
- Represent clients at mediation and administrative hearings
- Assist in the investigation of systemic abuse and neglect in facilities serving people with disabilities
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Currently enrolled law student with a commitment to social justice and disability rights
- Ability to work 37.5 hours a week for a 10-week summer program
- Strong legal research and writing skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Must reside in California for the duration of the clerkship
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Fluency in Spanish for positions within the Fair Hearing Project
- Experience or coursework related to disability rights or public interest law
- Previous volunteer or internship experience in legal settings
- Familiarity with California disability law and advocacy
