      We are looking for a Safety Manager to proactively lead and manage the Safety Department in an efficient and cost-effective manner, ensuring the transfer of SHEQ requirements into full corporate and legislative compliance with minimum adverse effects on the Operations of RBM hence guiding the organisation to safety performance levels beyond compliance.

      Reporting to the HSE Business Lead you will be responsible for the following:

      • Provide specialised leadership to the Health and Safety team.
      • Collaborate with the Health & Safety team to develop, gain approval for, refine, and implement the health and safety strategy, ensuring compliance and alignment with relevant legislation and Rio Tinto standards.
      • Establish and monitor management systems such as ISO 14001, 9001, OHSAS 18001, and RT HSEQMS.
      • Support the operations by providing emergency services, medical facilities, medical services and FARB.
      • Evaluate and make recommendations for enhancing safety training and educational programs.
      • Ensure safe practices, systems and processes are applicable as well as comply with Mine, Health and Safety legislation, OHS Act and RT policies, standards and procedures.
      • Update COP’s and SOP’s to ensure validity and reliability.
      • Supervise and oversee the activities, performance standards, and behavior of designated support staff.
      • Provide guidance and leadership to enable team to carry out tasks safely and professionally.
      • Foster the technical and cultural development of staff through coaching and mentoring.
      • Prepare and manage the section’s annual budget by forecasting operational costs and monitoring monthly expenditure.
      • Prepare and manage the section’s 5-year CAPEX plan by forecasting operational requirements and monitoring/driving progress on a monthly basis

      What you’ll bring

      • Degree in Natural Sciences/Safety / Environment or equivalent
      • Minimum 10 years of experience in a mining sector within SHEQ is required.
      • A minimum MDP or alternate Business Management Qualification will be essential.
      • South African Driver’s license
      • Legal competency in one or more of the specialists SHEQ areas with generalist knowledge of others
      • Leadership in a form of team management is crucial.
      • Change management coupled with stakeholder management is key to this role.
      • Knowledge of Local occupational health and safety regulations as well as MHSA.
