- Inspect work area and plant for hazards, damage and defects.
- Examine drawings or specifications to determine work methods, sequence of activities or manufacture of components.
- Diagnose faults or breakdowns.
- Estimate time and materials required to complete jobs.
- Raise orders for materials.
- Undertake repairs or component changeouts as required.
- Clean and maintain tools and work area.
- Train other personnel or apprentices (if required)
- Ensure activities comply with safety, environmental and statutory requirements.
- Other duties as assigned by the company.
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 1 year experience in Welding or Industrial Mechanic preferred
- Must have the ability to stand for up to 4 hours per shift.
- Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
- Must have the ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on/off equipment and ladders.
- Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
- Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms/legs and good hand to eye coordination.
- Must have the ability to lift/raise 10 – 50 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently during the work shift.
- Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light/dark, in and around artificial light, and in a confined work area.

About the role:
We are currently seeking a Mechanic/Welder to join our Operations team at our El Segundo Mine. El Segundo mine is a surface coal mine located near Grants, New Mexico. The mine produces high quality thermal coal shipped by rail to fuel power generation in the Southwestern US.
The surrounding area has towns both large and small including Grants, Milan, Gallup, and Albuquerque. Outdoor recreation such as hiking, camping, mountain biking and fishing are very popular in this area due to its scenic beauty. There is a golf course in town and abundant public land, national monuments, and an ice cave/volcano within driving distance of Grants along with Mount Taylor, the highest point in NW NM at 11,300’ in elevation. Located off historic Route 66, Grants is a hidden gem in New Mexico.
Peabody El Segundo has a safety-first culture and strives to have zero recordable MSHA injuries/incidents.
This job is to carry out preventive and breakdown maintenance to fixed and mobile plant in open cut environment.
