Primary Purpose:
Performs complex intellectual property research and drafts related documents. Educates and provides consultation to ARUP community on intellectual property while developing related strategies and solutions.

Essential Functions
Anticipates, identifies, and resolves issues pertaining to intellectual property (IP). Advises management regarding development of IP strategies and solutions.
Drafts and reviews policies and procedures, regulations, and other documents regarding ARUP IP.
Researches and analyzes IP laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Educates and trains ARUP community about IP issues.
Conducts research and analysis for IP-related projects. Prepares written and verbal reports and recommendations.
As needed, may assist other ARUP departments with IP analysis required for contracts involving patent licenses.
Provides a supportive function in administrative hearings and IP litigation.
As needed, works with outside counsel, the University of Utah PIVOT Center, and the University of Utah Office of General Counsel.
Incumbent must remain current on changes to intellectual property law, scientific techniques, relevant ARUP and University of Utah policies, and the business implications of those changes. Some travel may be required.

Physical and Other Requirements
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
Communicate: Frequently and effectively communicate with others.
PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.
ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.
Abide by the Code of Conduct as outlined in the ARUP employee handbook.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Three or more years of experience in laboratory diagnostic field
Five years of patent experience at a law firm or in-house patent department
