      Job Summary:

      The Brilliant Catalyst is the on-campus incubator and experiential learning hub at Ontario Tech University with the mission to propel the next generation of innovation changemakers. Under the leadership of the Director, Creativity and Entrepreneurship, the Brilliant Catalyst provides support and guidance to a community of over 500 start-up companies.

      Brilliant Ventures is an exciting new university-operated fund for innovative startup businesses interested in accelerating their business growth. Brilliant Ventures will focus on providing startup capital investment, and venture support for projects aligned with the university’s key priorities, including ‘tech with a conscience’: improving the lives of humans and the planet through the ethical application of technology.

      Nature of work:

      Reporting to the Director, Creativity & Entrepreneurship, the Portfolio Manager, Brilliant Ventures, will oversee the design and maintenance of the Brilliant Ventures (BV) investment fund. BV will make strategic capital investments and provide venture support to start-up businesses that are aligned with the university’s key priorities, including ‘tech with a conscience’: improving the lives of humans and the planet through the ethical application of technology.

      Portfolio Manager, Brilliant Ventures will work closely with the Brilliant Catalyst team to identify investment-ready start-up companies, support Brilliant Ventures operations, and provide advisory services to start-ups that are part of the Brilliant Catalyst community. This position will require management of junior-level staff to ensure the administrative processes for the Brilliant Ventures are effective and efficient.

      Responsibilities/accountabilities:

      • Conduct due diligence on businesses interested in applying to Brilliant Ventures
      • Identify start-up businesses that meet the eligibility requirements for Brilliant Ventures
      • Market the Brilliant Ventures fund to relevant audiences to build interest in the Brilliant Ventures fund
      • Support businesses applying for Brilliant Ventures fund with preparing their pitch presentation, market research, financial projections, and more.
      • Provide mentorship and feedback to applying businesses to ensure they are prepare to present their business to the Investment Advisory and Management Committees
      • Introduce applying businesses to relevant stakeholders and partners as needed (including industry contacts, university personnel, ecosystem partners, etc.)
      • Work with the Director, Creativity & Entrepreneurship to facilitate investment meetings with relevant committee members
      • Provide research-based recommendations to the Investment Advisory and Management Committees and provide additional information about the applying businesses upon request
      • Coordinate regular meetings between committee members and investment-ready start-up businesses
      • Manage membership of Investment Advisory Committee and Investment Management Committee, and identify new members as needed
      • Report to Director, Creativity & Entrepreneurship and other relevant stakeholders on the activities of Brilliant Ventures
      • Attend events, tradeshows and conferences to build a funnel of investment ready companies for the Brilliant Ventures which may require some travel and overtime work as required.

      Education:

      • Completion of a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in finance, business or related field

      * Verification of Academic credentials may be required

      Required Experience:

      • 3 to 5 years experience supporting start-up businesses
      • Experience managing investment portfolios would be considered an asset
      • Experience working in an incubator, accelerator, or similar setting would be considered an asset
