      Description

      The Development Sciences (DevSci) Scientific Excellence Lead plays a crucial role for the scientific success of DevSci by partnering directly with the Development Sciences Senior Leadership Team (DSLT) to oversee and organize cross-functional scientific activities above the molecule/project level and to develop and execute strategies ensuring the scientific effectiveness and excellence of the entire DevSci organization. Core responsibilities of the Scientific Excellence Lead include, but are not limited to: (1) overseeing the mission-critical DevSci Pharmacology SubTeam Leader (PSTL) office supporting the DevSci-led subteams and their leads within the gRED project team system; (2) acting as coordinator/project manager for the Development Sciences Review Forum (DSRF) responsible for cross-functional review of DevSci’s scientific deliverables at major governance milestones and for conducting periodic portfolio reviews to ensure scientific consistency across the portfolio; (3) serving as liaison and coordinator for the DevSci cross-functional scientific strategy platform teams (Gene Therapy, Cell Therapy, and Nucleic Acid Based Medicines); and (4) coordinating the Development Sciences Promotion and Appointment Committee (DSPAC) responsible for assessing all scientific promotion proposals in DevSci in collaboration with other gRED appoint and promotion committees..

      This highly cross-functional individual contributor position reports to the Head of Financial Operations and will be expected to partner with senior leaders in the organization, engage and work closely with key scientific leaders and stakeholders in the DevSci scientific community, as well as other critical R&D interfaces across gRED and the broader Roche organization, including Research, Clinical, Portfolio & Strategy, and Product Development. Note: Given the nature of this role and strategic impact, remote applicants will not be considered for this position.

      Functional Role and Key Accountabilities

      • Partners closely with the Development Sciences leadership team (DSLT) and scientific community to develop and execute strategies and initiatives to ensure deep, cross-functional drug development expertise, an end-to-end mindset, and the ability to develop and execute innovative scientific strategies across scientific leadership roles (e.g. Pharmacology Subteam Leads (PSTLs)) within DevSci.

      • Functions as trusted advisor and strategic thought partner to DSLT on aspects of scientific excellence across DevSci in support of all modalities and across the entire research and development phases.

      • Leads the DevSci PSTL Office, which is responsible for: (1) managing the PSTL selection process in collaboration with DSLT and the gRED Portfolio Strategy Management (PSM) group, 2) on-boarding and training new PSTLs, (3) organizing the PSTL forum as a platform to connect, communicate, educate, and share learnings for current and future PSTLs, (4) creating and executing strategies and programs to develop PSTL leadership capabilities and ensure optimal performance, (5) partnering with DSLT to develop and execute forward-looking strategies to ensure continued scientific, strategic, and organizational impact of PSTLs in a changing environment, and, (6) serving as a liaison to other team leader offices across gRED and Roche to ensure the PSTL role is well embedded and recognized in the organization.

      • Oversees and coordinates the cross-functional scientific DevSci Review Forum (DSRF) in close collaboration with the SVP of DevSci, DSLT, and the DevSci team leads.

      • Accountable and acts as a liaison between DSLT and the various DevSci scientific platform teams supporting the strategic and organizational deliverables of these mission-critical cross-functional teams.

      • Represents DevSci and/or DSLT on cross-functional initiatives relevant to the accountability of the role, e.g. initiatives to evolve the internal project team system.

      • Partners with other team leader offices or governance offices (e.g., PTLs, PMs, DRC office) to ensure that the DevSci sub-teams are well embedded and recognized in the wider project team and governance environment.

      • Acts as the DevSci liaison to other cross-functional platform teams (e.g., in Drug Discovery) to ensure seamless connection and alignment to the DevSci platform teams.

      • Coordinates the DevSci Promotion and Appointment Committee (DSPAC) and serves as liaison to other committees with similar scope in the organization.

      • Responsible for the periodic review of the strategic DevSci portfolio in collaboration with the scientific functions and DevSci team leads.

      • Works closely with the DevSci Chief of Staff to ensure alignment of scientific and organizational strategies.

      Qualifications and Experience

      • Degree in life sciences or engineering required, advanced degree and/ or relevant work experience in a related field is required.

      • 10+ years experience in drug development and/or pharmaceutical R&D.

      • Prior work experience at Genentech and knowledge of the gRED project team system including subteam structure and governance, and/or drug development project team experience at another pharmaceutical company.

      • Excellent interpersonal skills with a track record of relationship-building and partnering with senior leaders in scientific organizations.

      • Exceptional ability to influence Scientist/Directors/VPs through active listening, communication, and facilitation outcomes.

      • Skilled in strategic thinking, planning, and execution with proven impact.

      • Experience in change management and continuous improvement.

      • Track record of independently managing multiple complex and/or cross-functional projects in parallel to successful completion.

      • Strong facilitation skills, and demonstrated ability to help collaborators and stakeholders address gaps, seize opportunities, and solve critical challenges.

      • High degree of independence, flexibility, and ability to quickly adapt to emerging priorities while remaining focused on long-term goals.

      • Critical thinking and problem solving skills with the ability to effectively work through ambiguity to unearth and address core issues and challenges.

      • Results-oriented with attention to detail and quality, and the ability to proactively prioritize activities considering organizational and business needs

      • Works effectively with limited supervision/direction to deliver high quality results in a timely fashion.

      • Excellent written and verbal executive communication skills and ability to communicate and influence in a global environment.

      • Ability to toggle between strategic and tactical and/or administrative responsibilities as needed to drive results.

      The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $162,100-$301,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
