- Assists with development, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of Parks, Recreation and Arts activities, events, and projects, including summer day camp, youth athletics and summer camps, senior and adult programs, adult athletics, and special events.
- Leads a special project in a desired area of work. Examples of special projects may include overseeing enrichment activities in a specific topic area in our full day camps (arts, nature, theater, outdoor recreation, etc.), overseeing volunteers at events/programs/camps, delivering training for volunteers or coaches, or working on policy and accreditation projects.
- Assists with scheduling, training, and providing direction for volunteers.
- Utilizes recreation management software to manage assigned program area.
- Supports department by performing a variety of administrative, technical, and analytical projects and assignments.
- Assists with preparing visual and written content for formal documents (e.g., reports, evaluations, etc.)
- Responds to requests for information and general questions from the public.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of the basic principles and methods of public administration.
- Knowledge of and/or experience working with recreation programs and activities.
- Computer proficiency: including Microsoft Office programs.
- Demonstrates strong problem-solving abilities and techniques.
- Ability to work with minimum instruction and supervision.
- Ability to establish, foster and maintain positive, harmonious working relationships with other employees, officials, and the public.
- Must be a currently enrolled college student pursuing a school-related internship
- Students pursuing a parks, recreation, arts, public administration, education/teaching, or related degree preferred.
- Requires CPR/First Aid Certification (provided if needed)
Cary’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is looking for enthusiastic and motivated student interns for the summer! This role will offer students with a passion for parks, recreation and community programing a valuable opportunity to gain introductory exposure to the administration and execution of a variety of programs including parks, recreation, arts, summer camps, community events, and sports venues. Interns will be strategically placed in the division of the department that aligns with their interests and experience. Additionally, interns will offer essential support to the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department while performing other duties or responsibilities as assigned.
Interns should be available to work the entire summer season May-August (10-14 weeks). This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evening and weekend hours.
This is a seasonal (May-August), non-benefited position, up to 40 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours. Hours are typically Monday-Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. but could include some evening and weekend hours.
Conditions of Employment
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
