      POSITION SUMMARY:

      Reporting to the Vice President, Emergency Services and Inpatient Operations, the Senior Director Inpatient Operations provides strategic and operational oversight for inpatient flow initiatives that impact discharge volume and inpatient length of stay. The Senior Director provides leadership for, administrative, operational, business development, and physician and nursing relationship activities in support of strategic initiatives that drive inpatient performance. The Senior Director works to assure the effective integration of strategy and operations achieving the defined key performance indicators. This position collaborates with nursing, physicians, rehab therapies, and other service providers to enhance service delivery to patients in the continuum of care. The Senior Director will possess an extensive operational leadership experience within complex multi-stakeholder environments. Strategic leadership background with diverse workforces, experience and success as an executive change agent, adept in creating compelling presentations to executive and line staff audiences, and accomplished in developing and implementing a vision for driving performance by effective collaboration with clinical and operational stakeholders.

      The key responsibilities of the position can be summarized as:

      • Establishing focus reflective of the organizational mission and goals.
      • Setting priorities for the inpatient operations team and developing work plans and metrics to measure success in collaboration with clinical leaders, departmental stakeholders, and the Vice President.
      • Helping to launch strategic initiatives to drive improvement in inpatient flow and care team efficiency and regionalization; to expand or enhance potential post-acute disposition options; and to support smooth transitions of care and initiatives to reduce readmissions and increase quality
      • Developing a highly capable and committed team – all of whom share a passion for exceptional care and who support initiatives to drive performance in key operational and quality metrics
      • Partnering with the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Inpatient, Associate Chief Nursing Officers, and the Vice President of Emergency Services and Inpatient Operations in developing strategic, operational and financial plans.

      Essential responsibilities:

      Operations, including budgeting, project management, strategic and operational planning, quality, compliance (JCAHO, OSHA), and continuous improvement initiatives.

      • Planning Processes:
      • In collaboration with key clinical leaders, such as the Associate Chief Medical Officer, and the Associate Chief Nursing Officers for ICU, Med/Surg, and Care Management, as well as Inpatient Medical Directors and Nursing Directors, leads the development of strategic planning efforts. Creates goals and target metrics for inpatient operations across key areas.
      • Ensures departmental performance targets are linked to the Medical Center’s goals.
      • Creates effective PowerPoint presentations to socialize identified goals and initiatives with key stakeholders and create organizational buy-in

      • Day-to-Day Operational Leadership and Management:
      • In partnership with the Associate Chief Medical Officer, Associate Chief Nursing Officers for ICU and for Med/Surg and for Care Management, supports the creation of clinical and operational effectiveness targets, improvement plans and reporting systems to ensure the delivery of high quality, effective and efficient patient care.
      • Collaborates effectively with clinical leaders – both physician and nursing – to drive performance against identified goals and targets
      • Develops and presents compelling presentations and effectively manages large multidisciplinary meetings of clinical and operational stakeholders

      • Financial Management:
      • Leads the the development and implementation of capital and operating budgets using system-wide standards and processes.
      • Monitors volume, revenue and expense budgets closely, assuring that all targets are met and action plans are implemented immediately if issues are identified.

      Staff Development, including divisional departmental-specific management of Human Resources such as recruitment, retention and organizational health initiatives.

      • Recruitment & Retention
      • Selects hires and retains departmental leaders who demonstrate both the professional requirements and Medical Center values.

      • Performance Management
      • Clearly defines work expectations.
      • Addresses performance issues immediately and directly.
      • Conducts performance appraisals annually within organizational timeframes.

      • Development
      • Assists team members in addressing challenges and skill deficits.
      • Assigns work that uses Director’s skills and talents, provides responsibility and challenge, allows for creativity, and offers leadership growth opportunities.
      • Continually provides guidance and support to team members.
      • Encourages continuous growth and helps Directors and managers to realize full potential by identifying stretch objectives. Ensures development plans are in place and are reviewed annually.

      JOB REQUIREMENTS:

      EDUCATION:

      • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Public health or other related degree, or commensurate experience.

      EXPERIENCE:

      • Work requires ten+ years of experience in operations leadership or complex healthcare-related field. Consulting experience strongly preferred.
      • Work requires minimum of five years of management experience.

      KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

      • A proven track record of successful outcomes in executing a progressive approach to managing administrative operations that balances effective staffing and impact of health economics with quality outcomes and patient satisfaction.
      • Ability to understand and contribute to the strategy of the Medical Center.
      • Outstanding interpersonal and collaborative skills in championing the importance and the value of a multidisciplinary team approach.
      • A demonstrated track record of fostering a culture of responsiveness, cooperation and collaboration, financial accountability and successful outcomes.
      • Experience and success serving as a role model, especially in employing outstanding interpersonal skills to motivate all levels of staff. A track record of success in developing and mentoring directors, managers and individuals new to and growing in leadership roles.
      • Politically astute, able to navigate a complex health system and to connect with physicians, caregivers, and administrators.
      • The ability to function effectively in a highly matrixed organization and comfort with a high degree of ambiguity. A talented problem solver, with the ability “to figure things out” at times when there does not appear to be a clear answer.
      • Experience with budgetary development and management and hospital operational processes are necessary.
      • Strong strategic and critical thinking skills and financial acumen;
      • Strong PowerPoint and communication skills and an ability to tailor and create compelling presentations for appropriate audiences
