      About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two highly motivated and experienced Senior Marine Geoscientists to join the BGS Environmental Change Adaptation & Resilience Challenge Area.

The Marine Geoscience Team undertakes research to develop maps and models of the shallow geology of the UK continental shelf and provides expert geological knowledge to support a range of sectors (e.g. offshore renewable energy, linear assets, habitats).

We work closely with European partners to develop harmonised datasets that inform planning in the marine environment and provide science management for major scientific ocean-drilling projects.

As a Senior Marine Geoscientist, you will play a key role in supporting and developing our portfolio of projects, providing leadership, project management, and proven specialist scientific expertise. The key responsibilities of the role include:

      · Contributing to the development of marine geoscience research aligned with BGS strategic priorities.

      · Developing new opportunities by building relationships with research and industry partners, and by preparing grant proposals and/or bids for commercial projects.

      · Managing project teams to deliver external income and national capability projects.

      · Publishing your research in the academic literature and write and deliver comprehensive client reports to firm deadlines.

      · Contributing to the visibility of the BGS marine geoscience community, presenting at conferences, and representing the team externally to public and private sectors.

      About you

We are looking for marine geoscientists with the skills to develop and lead projects, and the ability to develop new ideas for research, products, and services.

You will have a PhD or an MSc and significant subsequent comparable work experience in a relevant science area, plus experience of working within a research environment. Experience of project management including budgetary management is essential for these roles.

The post involves extensive team working; therefore, you should be able to work effectively with others, in a strong multidisciplinary environment, and have excellent time management skills.

Please also refer to the additional specific essential and desirable skills criteria for this post.

Please note – you will be required to have the appropriate level of security screening/vetting required for the role. UKRI reserves the right to run or re-run security clearance as required during your employment.

      How to apply

Applicants are required to include a CV and covering letter outlining their suitability for the role. We would stress the importance of this paperwork in our selection process.

A well thought through application providing evidence and examples of how you meet the advertised essential and desirable criteria for the post will be considered far more favourably than a generic covering letter and CV.
