      The Ministry of Agriculture and Food’s Food and Beverage Branch leads market and business development activities for farmers, food processors and Indigenous communities as well as key initiatives such as Feed BC, Buy BC, and the B.C. Food Hub Network. Working in partnership with various partners, industry, and levels of government, the Indigenous and Entrepreneur Services Unit delivers a suite of programs and services to support current and next generation agriculture entrepreneurs through business supports and resources to enhance the sector’s capacity, resilience, inclusivity, and competitiveness. The Unit leads Ministry programs and services to support the growth and development of youth, new entrants, farm businesses, and Indigenous agriculture and food systems.

      The Youth Development Specialist will be responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating programs and resources, in collaboration with community organization partners, with the goal of increasing the engagement and participation of youth in the BC agriculture and food sectors. The Youth Development Specialist will serve the entire geographic area of the province, acting as the lead provincial authority for one or more youth development program areas including but not limited to educational resource development, youth programs, volunteer training, and the granting of external academic credit for community-based agriculture education. The Youth Development Specialist represents the Ministry in its relationship with 4-H British Columbia with support from the Youth Development Manager and by serving on 4-H councils and committees at the regional, provincial, and national levels. The position also leads the ongoing coordination and facilitation of regional partner meetings, in 2-3 regions of the province.

      Job Requirements:

      • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a natural resource management or education related field (e.g. agriculture, food systems, environment, education, communications, organizational leadership, etc.) plus a minimum of 2 years’ experience working with youth development, volunteer organizations, or community development, OR
      • Diploma in a natural resource management or education related field (e.g. agriculture, food systems, environment, education, communications, organizational leadership, etc.) plus a minimum of 5 years’ experience working with youth development, volunteer organizations, or community development.
      • Experience in agriculture, food and/or seafood sectors.
      • Experience teaching and/or creating educational material, planning and/or coordinating education events.
      • Experience with project and/or program management and evaluation.
      • Experience working collaboratively in partnership arrangements for program/project delivery.
      • Preference may be given to applicants with more years of experience (as noted above).

      Provisos /Willingness statements:
      • Extensive travel within BC is required.
      • Flexible scheduling is required as community organization meetings and conferences frequently occur outside of and extend beyond the normal working hours.
      • A valid BC driver’s licence (or equivalent) is required.

      This position can be based out of any of the locations listed above.
      Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
