- Housing Development (Real Estate Strategy):
- Support the development team on active transactions (e.g., closings, requisitions, and design meetings).
- Conduct market research and demographic analysis for potential new sites.
- Join site visits to inspect construction progress and existing building conditions.
- Asset Management (Financial & Compliance):
- Analyze property performance data to identify trends in utility usage and operating expenses.
- Assist in the preparation of annual operating budgets and financial summaries for board review.
- Learn the basics of Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) compliance and regulatory reporting.
- Mission (Community Impact):
- Collaborate with social service staff to support resident programming, track service delivery outcomes, and understand how supportive housing model's function.
- Participate in internal reviews of our "Faith-Based" initiatives to see how non-profit ownership creates value beyond the bottom line.
- Participate in "Lunch & Learn" sessions with senior leadership to discuss career paths in non-profit development.
- Travel at least 20% of the time using public transportation or vehicle, traverse city streets, occasionally ascend/descend stairs, and be exposed to outside weather conditions.
- Remain stationary using a computer at least 50% of the time, in meetings and/or events.
- Carry a laptop to offsite work locations.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment i.e. copier, fax, scanner, postage machine and printer.
- Ability to use and respond to phone calls.
- Ability to lift, transport, move, and store document files.
- Current student (Junior/Senior Undergraduate or Graduate level).
- Mission Alignment: A genuine interest in affordable housing and community development.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and AI usage.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Curiosity and a willingness to ask questions.
Description
Summary: Catholic Homes New York is dedicated to the belief that having a home is a sacred human right. With a portfolio of approximately 3,000 affordable units, we specialize in developing, constructing, and acquiring housing for families, seniors, and supportive populations. We are committed to the long-term stability of our communities by providing self-funded social services and actively growing our portfolio through new construction and strategic acquisitions.
Internship Overview:
This undergraduate internship provides a hands-on, comprehensive experience across the full lifecycle of affordable housing. You will work directly with the Catholic Homes team across three key pillars: Housing Development, Asset Management, and Mission.
This role is designed to expose students to the real-world complexities of developing and managing mission-driven housing. You will participate in site visits to active construction projects, attend design meetings, and gain insight into how non-profit developers help solve the housing crisis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Salary: $25 Hourly
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are generally 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday - Friday. Additional weekend and evening hours may be required to meet agency deadlines.
