- Support the Head of Environmental Sustainability on the development, continuous improvement and implementation of our group environmental sustainability strategy.
- Determine our ‘position’ on key issues, working across the brands and channels to coordinate the company position and to determine ways to embed, train, manage and coordinate within the company.
- Maintain your subject matter expertise through formal and informal training across a number of environmental themes, such as climate, deforestation, nature and water stewardship
- Compile and draft approaches, policies, and standards for internal sign-off and update as and when required to maintain Sainsbury’s agreed position for given impact areas.
- Embed our responsible sourcing strategy and ensure commercial teams and suppliers (including GNFR suppliers) are aligned to our values and strategy; through supporting and embedding the approach ‘in the line’ and directly through supply chains with all relevant actors
- Identifying, leading, and managing the implementation of supply chain initiatives aligned to our investment strategy.
- Deal with issues management with our brand communications and category teams, ensuring clear escalation and recommendations on approach on all sustainability issues.
- Ensure effective internal and external communications, providing content for communications teams.
- Develop appropriate, relevant training content for suppliers and colleagues.
- Be a brand ambassador for Sainsbury’s through engagement with relevant external stakeholders (incl. multi-stakeholder forums, government, suppliers, regulators etc.)
- Budget management and effective business case development for sustainability programmes
- Demonstrate at all times alignment to Sainsbury’s values; own it, make it better, be human.
- Lead the agenda with relevant stakeholders to embed and deliver the Group’s sustainability strategy, including colleagues, suppliers, investors and NGOs
- Degree and significant experience in environmental sustainability, preferably within the food or General Merchandise and Clothing sectors
- Experience in the management of environmental risks in food and/ or non-food (general merchandise / clothing) supply chains
- Supplier Scope 3 strategy and action plans to meet SBTi targets
- Scope 3 reporting methodology in the Food sector (eg SBTi FLAG, CDP, Manufacturing2030)
- Climate Transition Plans, including climate resilience.
- Carbon pricing
- Emission reductions across fuel & logistics
- Industry collaboration on Scope 3
- Experience at manipulating complex sustainability datasets on tools such as Microsoft Excel
- Familiar with the complexities of a large customer-focused business, delivering results at a rapid pace
- Knowledge of relevant networks and stakeholders in the field of environmental sustainability
- Able to navigate environment of high ambiguity and change – in exchange for support and guidance
- Experienced at managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders, including budgets
- Familiar with risk assessment and management, prioritising activities in an environment of competing priorities
- Capable of training, coaching, and providing on-going support to both internal and external stakeholders
- Experience at managing communication and reporting – preferable on sustainability topics - including planning, supporting delivery and maintaining content where appropriate.
- Ability to work flexibly around an evolving agenda
