      Job summary

      Under supervision the post holder is responsible for carrying out assigned tasks as part of the clinical team in support of registered practitioners, and to undertake some aspects of care provision under supervision. Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of service users, always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights, through the adoption of persons centred care principles within the perioperative environment of the operating theatres.

      Main duties of the job

      To assist the qualified staff in providing perioperative care to patients by undertaking a range of support duties, working under the direction and supervision of the qualified theatre practitioner.

      To ensure patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines

      To act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care

      Provides support and assistance to professionals in the implementation of plans of care for individual patients

      To act as a circulating person in theatre, undertaking essential tasks within the theatre team such as the WHO checklist, surgical counts, data input, specimen retrieval and labelling, cleaning and patient transfers

      Provide reassurance and support to patients, carers and family

      Maintains patient privacy, dignity and respect to patients at all times

      Demonstrates compassion by recognising and responding to individual needs in a warm, thoughtful, sensitive and helpful way

      To respond to patient requests for non-clinical information to improve communication

      Establish and maintain communication with people on routine and operational matters

      Evidence of a General Education e.g. GCSEs or equivalent in Maths and English

      NVQ 2 in Healthcare/QCF Diploma in Health Level 2 or equivalent in area of speciality or an equivalent level of working experience within a similar role

      Knowledge

      Knowledge and experience of taking clinical observations

      Understanding the requirements of Patient Confidentiality

      Knowledge of Hospital Systems

      Knowledge of Manual Handling of patients, using lifting aids

      Good hygiene skills (e.g. hand washing etc)

      Able and willing to work flexible shift patterns, including weekends and nights according to the service

      Ability to recognise own limitations and seek more senior assistance where required
