      TITLE: Transportation Shop Manager

      SALARY RANGE: $60,000 to 70,000 (based on education & experience)

      SUPPLEMENTAL PAY: Stipend - eligible when requested by Director to drive an a.m. or p.m. bus route

      REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

      This is a year around position f ully benefitted to include: medical, dental, vision, life insurances; sick, personal, & vacation days as well as state retirement (PERF).

      SUMMARY: Supervises daily activities of vehicle repair and maintenance operation to ensure proper performance, repair and safety of all district vehicles.

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      Required

      • two years’ experience in the automotive, bus, or truck repair industry,
      • must possess and maintain a valid Indiana Class A or B CDL License with passenger, school bus, and air brake endorsements or agree to obtain within 90 days,
      • must possess and maintain an acceptable motor vehicle Record,
      • must obtain, possess and maintain certification as a Indiana school bus driver, and
      • must possess strong leadership and supervisory skills and excellent work habits.

      Preferred

      • five years supervisory experience,
      • technical or Associate Degree,
      • ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); ability to maintain control in stressful situations,
      • coordinate all vehicle repairs, fueling and wash bay operations,
      • direct supervision of and work with shop personnel,
      • knowledge of Indiana school bus specifications and inspections,
      • knowledge of Indiana transportation code and Indiana education code as related to student transportation,
      • knowledge of automotive diagnostics, repair and maintenance processes, and
      • ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts.

      RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Provide guidance and direction to all staff members assigned to Fleet Maintenance.
      • Prioritize work order and assign appropriate shop staff.
      • Maintains vehicle records and repair data in the districts fleet.
      • Responsible for the procurement of goods and services in compliance with district purchasing guidelines.
      • Responsible for inventory records of supplies and parts.
      • Responsible for the professional development of all shop staff members.
      • Attend all in-service training classes and professional development as required by the district and/or transportation department.
      • Practice safe work habits and use personal protective equipment as required.
      • Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
      • Submit to Drug and Alcohol Testing as required by School Policy and Federal Law.
      • Routinely inspect all shop equipment and work area to maintain a safe environment for our employees
      • Implement shop procedures and policies through positive example, and instruction to others.
      • Attend all in-service training classes and professional development as required by the district and/or Director of Transportation
      • Keeps the Director of Transportation abreast of buses requiring major repairs, rolling repairs and total fleet readiness
      • Manage employee duty times as approved by the Director of Transportation
      • Adhere to the districts purchasing guidelines, and with the approval of the Director of Transportation.
      • Works closely with administrative assistant and office staff to ensure fleet vehicles are available for route and trip coverage.
      • Respond to breakdowns and/or accidents in a timely manner.
      • Maintain rapid deployment buses to expedite response from the repair shop.
      • Inspect work performed by mechanics in overhaul and repair of district automotive equipment.
      • Review, audit and approve completed work orders.
      • Perform state safety inspections for all district vehicles.
      • Establish and maintain vehicle preventive maintenance schedules.
      • Work irregular hours and respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
      • Assist in recruiting and screening of new shop employees.
      • Maintain shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.

      • Order equipment and supplies and maintain accurate records.
      • Recommend replacement of existing equipment.
      • Conduct annual inventory of physical equipment and supplies.
      • Supervise cleaning of buses by washing crew.
      • Direct the upkeep and appearance of shop and parking lot area.
      • Performs other reasonable duties as assigned.

      SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises and evaluates employees assigned to fleet maintenance including mechanics and shot helpers.

      EQUIPMENT USED: Small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, torch, jack, lift equipment, vehicle diagnostic, air conditioning, tire and balancing, repair equipment, personal computer, phone, and copier.

      PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching; routinely lift and carry parts and equipment 15-75 pounds; possess manual dexterity to complete projects in a craftsman fashion.

      ENVIRONMENT: Work around moving objects or vehicles; fumes, solvents, grease and oil. May work under conditions of inclement weather.

      The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
