What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Manually label selected sentences from news articles to identify types of impacts related to drought
- Assist in compiling and analyzing a unique dataset of news articles referencing drought across the United States
- Collaborate with the research team to improve understanding of flash drought impacts
- Help train a machine learning model to recognize and classify impacts from labeled data
- Engage in data-driven approaches to address real-world environmental challenges
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Strong reading comprehension and attention to detail
- Interest in climate science, environmental studies, data science, or related fields
- Curiosity about data analysis, machine learning, or artificial intelligence
- Ability to interpret short text passages and identify relevant information
- Previous coding experience is welcome but not required
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience or coursework related to climate impacts or environmental studies
- Familiarity with data annotation techniques
- Interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in environmental science
- Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently
- Previous research experience, particularly in a related field
