      Position Summary

      Under the direction of the Research Technical Services (RTS) Manager, Comparative Medicine, this position will provide a wide array of technical support for UNMC researchers including but not limited to oversight, scheduling and maintenance of multiple surgical and imaging facilities and related equipment, monitoring inventory veterinary drugs and supplies, sterilization services, technical assistance with research procedures including anesthesia administration and monitoring, performing surgery, peri-operative services, record keeping, veterinary care, agent and drug administration, data collection, breeding colony management, technical and aseptic surgery training for UNMC research personnel, and operation of transport vehicles. This position will ensure that all projects using animals comply with USDA, IACUC and AAALAC policies and regulations.

      1. Must carry a pager or mobile phone during working hours. (E)
      2. This position is considered essential personnel and will be required to work some weekends, holidays, and overtime if indicated. (E)
      3. This position will be required to take part on the Comparative Medicine emergency team which will be activated during severe weather and/or unusual circumstances where personnel must stay on site for extended periods to ensure the animals at UNMC are cared for. (E) 4. Possess strong communication skills. (E) 5. Must be detailed oriented to ensure accuracy of work product. (E) 6. Basic understanding of animal husbandry, animal behavior, and animal welfare. (E)
      7. Ability to understand and follow specific instructions, procedures and/or SOPs . (E)
      8. Basic knowledge of supplies, equipment, and inventory control. (E)
      9. Ability to observe, assess, and report animal health concerns. (E)
      10. Basic knowledge of pre-operative, intraoperative and post-operative procedures. (E)
      11. Basic understanding of local, state, and federal regulations as related to animal biomedical research. (E)
      12. Ability to maintain animal health records. (E)
      13. Understanding of sterile technique. (E)
      14. Basic ability to perform routine maintenance and repairs on veterinary and/or animal husbandry facilities/ equipment. (E)
      15. Ability to perform technical and clinical service work with a variety of species of animals. (E)
      16. Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies. (E)

      Bachelor's degree
