The City of Missouri City, known as the “Show Me City,” is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join its Financial Services Department. This is a mid-level, professional, full-time position responsible for supporting the City’s financial operations and maintaining the accuracy and integrity of its financial records.

The Staff Accountant is required to have a strong financial accounting background and will be responsible for processing financial transactions, conducting research and analysis, performing account reconciliations, and supporting various accounting and financial reporting functions. The position serves as the departmental lead in areas of accounting and operating activities and requires an independent thinker with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and internal motivation.

The Staff Accountant works collaboratively with internal departments, external stakeholders, vendors, auditors, and other governmental entities to ensure financial transactions and accounting activities are completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and accounting standards.

This position plays an important role in supporting the City’s financial accountability, transparency, and operational effectiveness while providing high-quality financial information to support organizational decision-making.

Reporting relationship: Accounting Manager

  • Serve as the lead for the City’s financial accounting transactions.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to City Council members, constituents, vendors, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Analyze and interpret financial data, conduct comparative analyses, and recommend appropriate actions based on findings and proposed changes in methods, processes, and materials.
  • Identify opportunities to increase productivity by streamlining accounting processes and coordinating information requirements.
  • Maintain technical and professional knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing industry publications, and contributing to team initiatives.
  • Coordinate, prepare, and review financial and management reports, including bank reconciliations and liability account monitoring.
  • Analyze and reconcile monthly cash activities for the City’s operating bank account, Trust Fund account, and Golf Course bank account.
  • Prepare audit schedules and respond to internal and external audit requests.
  • Prepare journal entries to allocate costs to departments and prepare month-end and year-end adjusting entries and accruals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to resolve financial issues, provide support related to accounting activities, and respond to financial inquiries and requests.
  • Perform financial oversight and reconciliation activities by entering data into the City’s financial system, compiling reports, and presenting financial information.
  • Participate in the evaluation, development, and implementation of internal and external workflows and processes.
  • Complete special projects and assignments as directed by Financial Services management.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities and monthly and quarterly liability account reconciliations.
  • Assist with the processing of biweekly and monthly payroll by reviewing and posting personnel action entries and generating and reconciling payroll deduction reports.
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls and procedures for processing accounting transactions.
  • Process and review accounting assignments for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Complete departmental administrative and project-related assignments, including directing calls, providing requested information, preparing and updating policies and procedures manuals, and assisting with special projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance.
  • Remain subject to 24-hour recall as required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university is required.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of verifiable professional experience in governmental accounting or finance within a public or municipal organization is required.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is preferred.
  • Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) or Certified Government Finance Officer (CGFO) credentials are preferred.

Subject to emergency operations recall and other assignments necessary to maintain continuity of City services.
