Overview
Responsible at the advanced level for software development and technical requirements gathering. Independently completes work following banking technology standards and contributes to the overall stability and resiliency of banking technology within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC). This role supports customer-facing retail banking applications and digital customer maintenance capabilities. The ideal candidate is a full-stack engineer with a strong front-end focus and experience developing modern web applications using Angular and .NET technologies. This position offers the opportunity to influence the customer experience through the design, development, enhancement, and support of critical banking platforms. Engineers are expected to leverage approved AI-assisted development tools and practices in their daily workflow to improve software quality, accelerate delivery, enhance knowledge sharing, and increase overall engineering effectiveness.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work independently within the boundaries of the approved Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) to analyze, design, develop, and support applications that solve business needs while minimizing risk to the Bank through clean and resilient code.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and enhance customer-facing web applications using Angular, .NET, and related technologies.
  • Participate in the development of full-stack solutions while leveraging strong front-end development expertise to deliver intuitive and scalable user experiences.
  • Author organized, clean, efficient, and secure source code in at least one programming language, applying appropriate data structures and algorithms to solve business problems.
  • Utilize approved AI-assisted development tools to support software design, coding, testing, debugging, documentation, and problem-solving activities while maintaining ownership of solution quality, security, and accuracy.
  • Utilize source code management tools to manage and deploy code/applications and ensure compliance with SDLC policies and support merge conflict resolution.
  • Independently analyze and validate technical and business requirements to ensure completeness, accuracy, feasibility, and scalability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to document and communicate technical designs, implementation approaches, and dependency requirements.
  • Participate in application architecture and technical design discussions, providing input on technical solutions, integration patterns, and engineering best practices.
  • Conduct code and pull request reviews, providing constructive feedback and ensuring adherence to engineering standards, code quality, and change management practices.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, development practices, and AI-assisted development tools and recommend opportunities to improve application performance, maintainability, developer productivity, and customer experience.
  • Contribute to innovation efforts through the evaluation and adoption of new technologies, including AI-enabled solutions, where they provide measurable business or engineering value.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Promote an environment that supports a culture of belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required

  • Associate’s degree and a minimum of 5 years’ systems analysis and/or application development work experience or Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years’ systems analysis and/or application development work experience. In lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 7 years’ education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years’ systems analysis and/or application development work experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in a minimum of one relevant programming language.
  • Experience developing modern web applications using Angular and/or other front-end frameworks.
  • Experience developing applications within a .NET environment.
  • Experience building and supporting full-stack applications.
  • Experience working with REST APIs, web services, and modern application architecture.
  • Ability to analyze technical requirements and translate them into scalable software solutions.
  • Experience participating in code reviews and adhering to software engineering best practices.
  • Experience utilizing AI-assisted development tools to support software engineering activities such as coding, testing, troubleshooting, code review, or documentation.

Education and Experience Preferred

  • Angular development expertise.
  • C# and .NET development experience.
  • Experience developing customer-facing digital applications.
  • Exposure to banking, financial services, or other highly regulated industries.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools and applying responsible AI practices within a regulated technology environment.
  • Advanced analytical skills specific to application development.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Ability to multitask on complex projects.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $97,100.00 - $161,800.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
