Directs and supervises the activities of the chartering function to ensure adequate and appropriate vessels are chartered to meet the company’s operating requirements.
Works with the Marine Charterers and helps lead the negotiation of chartering terms consistent with market conditions.
Coordinates with Manager of Marine Operations to ensure the team is delivering on the accuracy and timing of instructions to both chartered in vessels and company relets.
Coordinates with Manager of Marine Operations to ensure that the team's assessment and checking of claims from owners/brokers for demurrages, detention, and deviation within the terms of the charter party is done in a timely manner in order to negotiate prompt settlement.
Provide recommendations for maximizing the fleet revenue and profits on the spot chartered crude vessels.
Perform and help coach marine charterers on day-to-day chartering and operations for the Asphalt program and associated vessels on either time or spot charter for same.
Design of chartering strategies and constant review of market conditions, evaluation and recommendation of candidate ships and barges from an operational and financial standpoint and negotiation of the charter conditions with the owners, operators, and brokers.
Coordinate and supervise chartered ships and barges operations, which includes, for spot voyages, the actual freight versus planned freight cost variance analysis and corrective action, recommendations, invoice approval and payment for follow-up. For time chartered vessel, analysis of speed and consumption performance for both owned and time chartered vessels to ensure compliance to agreed speed and consumption within their respective charter parties. In non compliance situations, ensure that owner is placed on notice and lost costs claimed back.
Ensure that all vessels have sufficient bunkers on board, and that the correct controls are in place to allow the required quality of bunkers to be delivered.
Identify analysis, and present to management, time charter opportunities with focus on lowering the cost per Bbl of either crude or product transportation.
Compile monthly, quarterly, and yearly KPIs, and performance data for both accounting and management.
Use well developed and proven leadership skills to interact effectively and honestly with senior leaders and other stakeholders.
Work collaboratively with direct team and hold individuals accountable for commitments, job performance and behaviours by providing regular, timely, and specific, constructive feedback.
Provide coaching and mentoring to team members.
Lead project work related to marine chartering and delegate to charterers to help support this project work. Communicate with other stakeholder supporting project work.
Work closely with the Senior Manager of Marine Logistics on strategic initiatives and future needs for the Marine space.
Strong analytical and negotiation skills.
Strong financial analysis abilities
Strong communication skills, both written and spoken
Excellent listening skills, ability and willingness to invest time in understanding the direction of the various shipping markets you will be expected to follow.
Flexible and adaptable to constant changing and fast moving environment/situation
Travel is not a requirement for this position.
Law Degree or Bachelor of Business or BSc in Marine Transport
Excellent knowledge of Maritime Law, chartering terms and conditions, and its implications
Good knowledge of claim procedures/settlements
Member of the Institute of chartered shipbrokers an asset
Strong Project Management skills - Project Management designation as asset
Strong Financial knowledge - MBA/CPA designation an asset
A combination of education and experince may be considered
Experience: (business related and approx. # of years).
5- 10 years experience in tanker ship chartering
5-10 years Experience in tanker vessel operations is required
Minimum 3 years of Project Management or leadership experience required

What you can expect in a typical day
As a Marine Chartering Manager, you will be an integral part of our Marine Charterer team. You will be responsible for leading a team of two Marine Charterers with an overall responsibility for all chartering requirements including black and clean oil barges (Canadian & American flag), crude shipping on Suezmaxs, Aframax, and VLCCs (Canadian & Foreign flag) and vessels from Europe. They manage successful chartering at better than market condition to ensure low transportation costs per Bbl to the company. Their responsibilities also include management of vessel performances and procurement of marine bunkers, ensuring minimal risk with charters on exposure in terms of schedule reliability, meeting emission regulations, and meeting customer delivery windows. Securing vessel availability for long term, short term and spot charters will be required as well as larger long term project supply strategies.
