      The Communications Secretary is responsible for the performance of secretarial functions involving the exercise of original judgment, discretion and independent thought, in connection with the operation of an Admissions Office. This position requires an organized individual with strong secretarial experience who takes pleasure in working with the public and has the ability to perform tasks timely and efficiently as a member of a team.

      The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

      1. Generate and coordinate the distribution of all written communication from the Office of Admissions including: acceptance packages and all letters presently generated through the Standard Operating Procedures for Letter Generation
      2. Provide overall secretarial support to the director and the Office of Admissions.
      3. Provide those who inquire with information about University and department policies.
      4. Assist in the coordination and participate in the execution of Admission’s recruitment and/or enrollment activities including: open houses, special receptions, new student orientations, etc.
      5. Assist with the supervision of student employees and general clerical and secretarial tasks.
      6. Requires highly skilled secretarial experience and effective interpersonal and customer relations skills, including diplomacy and the ability to work effectively with individuals from a wide range of personal and academic backgrounds.
      7. Will work as a liaison with other campus offices and constituencies.

      The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

      1. Must have extensive experience working with a variety of computer applications including: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
      2. Must have experience working with databases and all applications relevant to the internet. Knowledge of Banner preferred.
      3. Must be able to work flexibly under the pressure of multiple deadlines simultaneously.
      4. Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters with discretion and tact.
      5. Must have the ability to work within a team and independently. The ability to be detail-oriented
      6. Must have the ability to determine priorities and establish and maintain a filing system.
      7. Must have the ability to take initiative and follow through on directives and requests.
      8. Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public.
      9. Must have the ability to work well with others and to interact positively with internal and external customers.
      1. Education: High school graduate or equivalent; some college preferred.
      2. Office of Admissions experience is a preferred. However, at least two years experience working in an office environment, which required meeting and greeting the general public and answering all inbound calls to the Office of Admissions.
      3. Excellent professional and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
      4. Proven customer service skills a definite plus.

      The criteria for evaluation in this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

      1. Demonstrate knowledge of the DSU fundamentals
      2. Reliable attendance and work results.
      3. Completion and quality of work according to established guidelines.
      4. Interaction and working relationship with co-workers and customers
