      Job summary

      The Maternity Service in UHD undertakes approximately 4,000 births per annum, providing consultant and midwifery led care in hospital and the community. The obstetric unit is the centre for high risk care for East Dorset.

      This post forms part of UHD's midwifery leadership team and is responsible for professional and clinical leadership across all aspects of Antenatal Inpatient care, achieving key performance indicators for an allocated team of registered and non-registered staff. This will include line management duties . Regular whole unit coordination shifts are part of the role. (Board holding). The post holder will be responsible for the provision of robust clinical leadership, role modelling and maintaining high standards of professional practice in all aspects of antenatal inpatient care, elective induction of labour and caesarean section pathways.

      The post holder will be required to work with the senior midwifery management team in providing an efficient and effective service within available resources, meeting agreed standards, objectives and statutory requirements, deputising for the senior inpatient matron when necessary.

      Main duties of the job

      To be a confident and expert Antenatal Ward and Elective Services Team midwife practitioner participating in the clinical areas rotas for an agreed proportion of work time.

      Provide specialist care and advice to all women who use the maternity services, offering clinical leadership to all grades of staff including junior medical staff.

      Close communication is required with the labour ward particularly in the coordination of induction of labour, elective caesarean and other planned antenatal obstetric procedures. Liaison with the alongside midwifery led unit, day assessment unit, postnatal wards, theatres and critical care to facilitate a safe and effective service.

      To ensure all work is undertaken in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust Values.

      To support student midwives and medical students during their studies acting as a senior expert clinician.

      To work effectively with allied departments such as infection prevention, pharmacy, ultrasound and physio teams.

      Demonstrate confident knowledge of national initiatives to improve maternity outcomes such as Saving Babies Lives Care Bundles, Better Births, Maternity and Neonatal Safety in Pregnancy and safety reports such as Ockendon 2020.

      Effective liaison with bereavement, antenatal clinic and antenatal screening colleagues to ensure empathetic and seamless care for couples experiencing pregnancy loss.
