      Introduction

      The Maryland Department of Agriculture is a department under Maryland's Executive Branch. Formed in 1972 by the Maryland General Assembly to address the agriculture needs for the State of Maryland, the Department oversees and serves as a regulatory body for animal health, consumer services to include marketing and lab services,plant and pest management and resource conservation. As the number one industry in Maryland, the diversity of agriculture programs in the State continue to expand and grow. The primary goal of thePLANT PROTECTIONandWEED MANAGEMENT SECTIONis to conduct regulatory inspections and provide educational programs to the public and our partners on ways to protect the health of plants and honey bees in Maryland. ***3 IMMEDIATE OPENING*** 1 opening in Western Region of Maryland (Allegheny, Garrett, Washington counties) 1 opening in Upper Eastern Shore (Caroline, Queen Anne's, Talbot counties) 1 opening in Lower Eastern Shore (Dorchester, Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset) This is seasonal work with variable hours, approximately 200 hours per season. Contractual employees are paid for actual hours worked only. Mileage will be reimbursed at the State of Maryland reimbursement rate (currently .655 cents per mile, subject to change) when traveling within your assigned region. This iscontractualemployment and does not include benefits such as leave time, holidays, or health insurance.

      LOCATION OF POSITION

      Maryland Department of Agriculture Headquarters-Annapolis, Maryland Mileage will be reimbursed at the State of Marylandreimbursement rate (currently .655 cents per mile, subject to change).In addition to conducting inspections in the assigned region, will occasionally makeroutine trips toheadquarters inAnnapolis for training,meetings and otherpurposes determined by the program.

      Main Purpose of Job

      Duties will include inspection of honeybee colonies for diseases, pests, and pesticide losses, recommendations of appropriate measures for honey bee colony management and control of honeybee pests and diseases, accurate record keeping/office work as required to document inspection actions and assist with licensing activities.

      POSITION DUTIES

Work will involve interactions with the public. Work will involve exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, high temperature and humidity and other outdoors exposure. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment. This is contractual employment and does not include benefits such as leave time, holidays, or health insurance. Mileage will be reimbursed at the State of Maryland reimbursement rate (currently .655 cents per mile, subject to change).

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

      Experience: A minimum of three years of successful, progressively responsible experience in a practical beekeeping program or in beekeeping inspection is required. Education: High School Diploma or GED

      DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

      Preference will be given to applicantswho possess the following preferred qualification(s).Include clear and specific information on your application regardingyour qualifications. Candidates with five or more years of successful, progressively responsible experience in apractical beekeeping program or in beekeeping inspection will be given preference.

      BENEFITS

      Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
