  Due to expansion of our service, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Scientist to join the Radionuclides and Radiation Protection team at the Regional Radiation Physics and Protection Service (RRPPS) at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB).

  RRPPS offers a range of radiation protection-based services to departments around the Midlands, ranging from clinical departments to industrial sites. We are based out of a purpose-built facility in Kings Norton, Birmingham, a short train ride from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The department consists of approximately 40 people, including Clinical Technologists, Clinical Scientists and Administrative staff, covering a variety of specialisms including Radionuclides, Diagnostic Radiology, MRI, Non-Ionising Radiation, Personal Dosimetry and Instrument Calibration.

  Due to the nature of work, employees are provided exposure to a large variety of different types of equipment from various manufacturers and a large range of sites both geographically and by profession. This makes RRPPS a great department for expanding and developing knowledge in the field of radiation protection and radionuclides.

  As part of the role, you will work to provide support both to sites undertaking radionuclides and to RPAs, RWAs and MPEs within RRPPS to aid in providing a high-quality radiation protection service throughout the Midlands.

  Main duties of the job

  As part of this role, you will carry out various duties within the Radionuclide team, including providing scientific support to customers regarding equipment related to work with radionuclides. This includes undertaking commissioning, routine quality assurance and remedial testing on nuclear medicine equipment such as gamma cameras, PET scanners, radionuclide calibrators and intraoperative gamma probes from a range of manufacturers. This work involves travelling to a range of sites across the Midlands to carry out required support and meeting customers from a variety of different professional backgrounds.

  You will also work in the protection advice team, which provides sites with advice relating to room design; Local Rules;IRMER Employer's Procedures;risk assessments; radiation incidents; optimisation, especially for paediatrics; staff and patient dosimetry.This work will be carried out in conjunction with MPEs, RPAs and RWAs to help sites ensure compliance with regulations relevant to work with ionising radiation and radionuclides (IRR17, IRMER17, EPR16 and CDG09).
