      Position Summary

      The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, is seeking exceptional candidates for a tenure track/tenured, fixed-term, or variable track faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The successful candidate will be a creative scientist or physician-scientist with expertise in bioinformatics, especially its application to problems in pathology research and pathology clinical laboratories. Applicants developing their own research program will be prioritized. Priority will also be given to applicants with the interest and ability to collaborate with ongoing departmental research efforts requiring bioinformatics expertise, such as analysis of unique microbial or viral genomes isolated in the clinical laboratory, cancer genomic and transcriptome sequencing, single cell sequencing, and analysis of multi-omics datasets. The department has a Ph.D. graduate student training program and pathology residency and fellowship programs. It is expected that the successful faculty applicant will lead the design of introductory bioinformatics education for these learners.

      Appointment and rank in the department will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications. There are opportunities for teaching in the School of Medicine and the Graduate School.

      Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

      The applicant must have a PhD, MD/PhD, or DVM/PhD degree.

      Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

      Applicants should have a strong record of recent accomplishments as a post-doctoral fellow or sustained productivity as an established faculty member.

      We especially seek applicants with specific quantitative training or experience in computer science, computer information systems, bioinformatics, genetics, statistics, mathematics, physics, computational biology, or a relevant field. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in DNA or RNA sequence analysis, Linux shell scripting, working in a cluster computing environment, R, and at least one of Python, Unix, Java, C/C++, or Perl. The candidate must have strong communication skills and serve as a departmental resource for those with limited computational experience.
