Job summary
This is an excellent opportunity to work in our dynamic Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and acute assessment unit (AAU) at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. We are a tertiary referral centre for the main medical and surgical specialities and we are complimented by tertiary trauma centre serving the South West population.
AMU provides 51 assessment beds assessing 18,000 patients annually. Supervised participation in delivery of the Post Take ward round would be an integral part of this post. We also incorporate a rapidly expanding acute assessment unit which sees in excess of 35 patients a day. While AAU is consultant led, there would be opportunity for the Registrar to gain experience in this crucial field of acute medicine.
Our services are supported by an on-site Acute GP service providing triage and clinical input. An adjacent Short Stay Ward enables rapid review and turnover of acute medical problems.
60% of our medical take is through self-referral to ED. We work closely with this department and provide consultant cover and junior support for direct Post-Take of these referrals.
You will be managerially and professionally accountable to Service Line Clinical Director in acute medicine.
Main duties of the job
The principal component of the post will be to deliver term time teaching to 3rd / 4th / 5th year medical students, as well as being closely involved in providing mentorship and guidance for junior members of the team. There is an option to be included in the take on-call rota upon negotiation. There are also excellent opportunities.
The Acute Medical Unit plays a major role in the provision and co-ordination of teaching of clinical medicine to Peninsula medical students, particularly 3rd, 4th and 5th year students, who spend a significant part of their clinical training on the MAU. The post holder would provide a substantial proportion of this teaching, around 24 hours a week. This would be in the form of formal feedback sessions, competency assessments and lectures. In addition to this they would be responsible for compiling the junior rota (under the guidance of one of the consultants) and organising the post graduate teaching sessions on the unit, including SIM training.
Outwith term time it is expected that you will be involved in the clinical services on the unit and will be part of the Acute Medical Registrar rota. Although there will also be a degree of clinical work within term time, it will be fitted around your teaching sessions.
About us
The post holder is encouraged to develop a speciality interest within the scope of the department with also research related ideas, QIP and audits.
We support applications from candidates aspiring for less than full time hours and/or flexible working.
We have an active Doctors Mess, Postgraduate Medical School, Medical Centre, Medical Library and Health and Leisure centre on site.

About the company
National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
