- On Specialist Register for base specialty with accreditation in Paediatric Intensive Care at time of application OR CCT with sub-specialty accreditation in Paediatric Intensive Care OR Specialty Registrar with CCT due within 6 months of interview date for UK RCPCH trainees (note that Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application)
- MRCPCH / MRCP / FRCA (or equivalent)
- Valid Level 3 Safeguarding training
- Valid BLS training
- Valid APLS
- Valid NLS
- Completion of RCPCH Progress PICM Curriculum and two years training in an RCPCH PICM ISAC approved centre / rotation paediatric intensive care medicine plus 6 months (minimum) of anaesthetics (stand alone), OR existing substantive practicing Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine in the NHS including transport, OR equivalent with evidence that this training has been signed off (at the time of application)
- Experience in transport of ventilated children
- Able to demonstrate competencies equivalent to Highest Specialist Paediatric training
- Evidence of continuous career progression
- Experience of working at Consultant level in PICM and transport
- Experience in managing paediatric trauma patients
- Experience in the use of POCUS
- Wider experience, research and training in providing sub-specialty service
- Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
- Able to communicate effectively with patients, their relatives, colleagues, managers, other agencies, and staff at all levels
- Able to work unsupervised and make decisions
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit / QI project and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
- Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation
- Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence so as to improve clinical outcomes
- Evidence of teaching medical students and junior doctors
- Evidence of effective leadership skills
- Understanding of management issues including medical management, clinical governance, service planning, and quality improvement

Job summary
Applications are invited for a full-time substantive Consultant Paediatric Intensivist to join the PICU team based at the Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales on the University Hospital of Wales site in Cardiff.Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.
Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.
You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £110,240 per annum to £160,951 per annum.
Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.
Main duties of the job
Cardiff's Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) is based in the Children's Hospital for Wales which was opened in March 2015 and consists of 7 commissioned ITU beds and 4 HDU beds. The Paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Cardiff is the only children's intensive care unit located within Wales and accepts children requiring intensive care from all of mid and South Wales. It treats patients with all paediatric conditions including neurosurgery and is a Major Trauma Centre; whilst those acutely requiring cardiac surgery are transferred to Bristol PICU.
Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University's School of Medicine will be expected.
