      This job posting is for a competitive position. The hiring department will conduct a preliminary review of your application to determine who to interview.       Under general supervision, is responsible for preparing and cooking foods, based on approved recipes, from food materials; serves as assistant to the manager of a school cafeteria; performs related duties as required.

      • Cooks and prepares various finished dishes based on recipes approved by the Food Services Dietitian or administration to be served in school cafeterias.

      • Measures temperatures of prepared foods, refrigeration equipment, or ovens at regular intervals with calibrated thermometers; ensures food safety temperatures are maintained.

      • Operates various types of institutional food preparation machinery and equipment to prepare finished dishes.

      • Adjusts timing of food preparation to adapt to changes in school meal periods based on school programming changes, bus arrivals, weather events, field trips, etc.; implements emergency changes to menus as needed.

      • Assists in the direction and performance of cleaning and sanitizing equipment and kitchen area used in food preparation; trains other food personnel to maintain sanitary conditions.

      • Cuts, cleans, and prepares raw foods or partially prepared foods for cooking.

      • Measures and weighs foods and ingredients and performs necessary computations to determine the proper amounts to be used.

      • Reviews and pulls inventory needed for menu preparation; defrosts ingredients according to food safety guidelines and menu requirements.

      • Assesses leftover food products for disposition and discards or stores properly.

      • Assists in maintaining storeroom records of usage and delivery to account for goods on hand.

      • Consults with Food Service Manager to find solutions to problems in preparing and serving meals.

      • Assists manager in operation of kitchen and performs management duties in manager's absence.

      • May operate cash register, count receipts, and balance out cash when needed.

      • May operate computer and Point of Sale Program.














      One (1) year of food service or food preparation experience.

      Possession of a valid Level I State of Ohio Food Protection Certification upon completion of the probationary period.

      Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required for some positions.The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to merge with an existing eligible list for this classification. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this position within the filing period indicated above and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. It is the responsibility of all applicants to provide a complete list of relevant work experience (previous and current) on the application. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of listed work experience. Unless otherwise indicated, any year of required experience is based on 12 months of full time employment.       The examination process will consist of a multiple choice test (88 questions), weighted 80% covering Reading Comprehension, Information Ordering, Inventory Control, Food Safety and Preparation, Recipe & Measurement Conversions; and a computer simulation test weighted 20% covering MS Outlook 2010, Word 2013 and Excel 2013. Accommodations Requests must be made upon application submission.

      Because this is a continuous post, exam dates are scheduled when a pre-determined number of applications are approved. Approved applicants will be notified by email of their scheduled test date and time.

      Candidates must bring a picture ID to the test.

      All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and may include a pre-employment drug test.

      The certification process will be the top 10 candidates on the eligible list, or top 25% of the list, whichever is greater, based on overall test score.
