      COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE
Our Mission is to perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and to provide enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and inspire current and future generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural resources.

Recognizing that 90% of Coloradans routinely access trails in Colorado, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Divisions (CPW) Trails Program exists to serve all trails interests in Colorado including riding, hiking, equestrian, hunting, fishing, and persons with special needs in its efforts to connect parks, federal lands and other trail systems into a statewide trails network. The work unit exists to administer the State Trails Program, addressing both non-motorized and motorized trail interests established under Colorado Revised Statutes § 33 Article 11, Article 14 and 14.5. The program provides between $9-12 million annually to local, state, tribal, and federal governmental agencies; recreation and school districts; and nonprofit organizations. In addition to funding, the program provides training, education, planning and technical assistance to promote the creation and stewardship of a statewide system of trails.

This position will oversee implementation of the priority components of the State Trails Program Strategic Plan that is intended to bring together state and federal government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to promote outdoor recreational trail opportunities, protect special places in Colorado, and encourage citizens and visitors to connect with natural areas. This will include overseeing the continued development of the Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) mapping system. The COTREX application and website make user-friendly trail data from over 230 land managers available to the public to encourage citizens to connect with natural areas, inform them about up-to-date closure information, proper etiquette when recreating outdoors, and additional ways to get involved with caring for Colorado’s public lands. This will include managing existing and developing new partnerships with Colorado land managers by ensuring their trails data is updated and offering trainings for staff to support their continued use of the app. Candidates will also be able to strategize and implement ways to communicate and raise awareness with the public on the issues facing Colorado’s trails, such as the need for seasonal closures and the importance of following ethics such as the “Care of Colorado '' campaign.

This position will also support the Trails Program through our grant process that works with local, state, and federal government agencies, as well as non-governmental organizations to provide funding that promotes outdoor recreational trail opportunities. This will include working with partners on both existing and potential trail projects to ensure all information is in compliance with program policies, reviewing current and past project maps to ensure all data is accurate, and providing technical assistance to entities and CPW staff to update maps.

Ideal candidates will have experience working with GIS software and data, will have worked with trail managers and stakeholders to understand barriers to trail projects as well as how to navigate through those barriers; will be familiar with trail funding opportunities and have experience securing funding for trail projects, and will have the necessary technology background and communication skills to effectively interact with the public, land managers, and the technical team that oversees the COTREX.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

Coordinate advancement of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s State Trails Program Strategic Plan through support of the Colorado Trails Explorer

Manage operations and communications for the state-wide trails mapping application – COTREX.

Communicate and coordinate recreational trail data and updates for all 236+ land managers and Regional Outdoor Partnerships.

Advise on further development and expansion of COTREX.

Support implementation of components of Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Trails Program Strategic Plan to ensure we are on track to meet the six goals outlined in that document as well as the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan.

Identify opportunities to educate the public on trail issues utilizing our state trails program website, COTREX, and other platforms

Support components of Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Trails Program Grant Programs

This position will coordinate with land managers and State Trails Program staff to ensure all necessary mapping data is accurate for projects that have received program funding. The incumbent must be able to accurately and effectively communicate with all involved parties and provide technical assistance to update data when needed.

This position will help support trails staff by creating and maintaining website information and webmaps for projects, being able to both present and create materials for meetings and trainings, promote grant funding opportunities, and review grant proposals.

This position will also support the State Recreational Trails Committee by assisting with the planning, set-up, document preparation, and record keeping for their quarterly meetings.
