      Description

      What do Group Exercise Instructors do?

      This position supports the work of the Channel Islands YMCA, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Group Exercise Instructor instructs group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Instructor must role model the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility and work daily to develop personal and meaningful relationships with members, volunteers, donors and community.

      • Instructional Expertise: Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
      • Ensure that your fitness classes meet YMCA and ACSM standards
      • Instructional Attendance: Instructors are responsible for their regularly scheduled classes, timeliness, and to maintain direct communication with their supervisor.
      • Maintain accurate class statistics per branch procedure.
      • Arrive 5-7 min. before class start time, allowing the start/end of class as scheduled. Set lighting, fans, stereo and equipment needed for class. When class is done return room to standard by retrieving batteries, turning fans off, returning all equipment to its designated area, record accurate attendance.
      • Welcome and greet class participants; encourage members to reach their fitness and wellness goals.
      • Immediately report problems, breakdowns in equipment and any unusual situations to the appropriate director.
      • Professional Certifications kept current: see below under Qualifications.
      • Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals or directs them to the appropriate staff person. Maintains up-to-date working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
      • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
      • Follows Channel Islands YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations according to EAP procedure.
      • Empathetically listen and communicate for understanding. Build relationships to create small communities. Build and nurture strategic collaborations within the community.
      • Attend scheduled wellness staff meetings.
      • Attend annual All Staff Meeting/events.
      • Be available and willing to substitute for fellow instructors.
      • Participates in Y fundraising efforts.
      • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

      Qualifications


      • Must be least 18 years old.
      • Previous related work experience preferred
      • Required certifications: CPR/AED, First Aid, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM, ISSA) with a focus on group fitness instruction, Y-USA Foundations of Group Exercise/Strength & Conditioning certification or equivalent higher education diploma.
      • Certification in areas of expertise or specialized format.
