      DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND FIRE MANAGEMENT

      Manage and reduce fire risk to protect Arizona's people, communities, and wildland areas to champion the health of Arizona's natural resources. The Department of Forestry and Fire Management provides services through strategic implementation of cooperative natural resources and fire assistance programs, development and support of statewide fire policies, and coordination of resources across all-lands and jurisdictions.

      Job Summary:

      This position manages forested lands for economic, recreational, conservation and public safety purposes in the assigned District.

      Job Duties:

      • Identify and prioritize forest and other natural resource management concerns. Develop short- and long-term, and local and regional plans for management of forest and other natural resources.
      • Conduct forest resource surveys, biomass inventories and product valuation. Map soils and vegetation, estimate fuel load and wildfire risk.
      • Perform project oversight and monitoring, report outcomes and recommend management actions.
      • Supervise field staff, maintain equipment, order supplies and services, manage budget.
      • Conduct public educational programs on forest stewardship and natural resource conservation with land owners, community members and agency personnel. Provide technical assistance to landowners, firefighters and other natural resource managers.
      • Other duties as assigned.

      Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

      Knowledge of:

      • Forest ecology and management, preferably obtained through professional forestry education.
      • Forest products and potential uses of the material generated by restoration treatments.
      • Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Geographic Information System (GIS), Google Suite and other programs.
      • Relevant environmental and cultural laws and regulations.

      Skills In:

      • Communication skills, both oral and written.
      • Listening skills, as a key to effective communication.
      • Facilitation skills, for collaborative issue identification, and problem solving.
      • Writing skills relevant to the development of natural resource management plans.
      • Skill in the use of forestry field instruments and software.
      • Leadership

      Ability to:

      • Speak, including public speaking.
      • Supervise and lead supporting staff
      • Walk, including on rugged and uneven terrain.
      • Think creatively and critically.
      • Read and write effectively.
      • Travel on State Business.

      Selective Preference(s):

      Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited school of Forestry or related natural resource program.

      Pre-Employment Requirements:

      A valid Arizona Driver's License.

      Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

      All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
