      The Role: As a Failure Analysis Engineer, you will be responsible for conducting technical lab work which drives prototype failure analysis and materials development investigations. You will develop and execute world-class analysis outcomes in the areas of sample preparation and physical/chemical characterization. A majority of time will be spent in a lab environment, so enthusiasm for hands-on work and developing lab procedures is important. You will manage a queue of failure analysis requests supporting Amazon hardware teams with the goal of driving design and manufacturing improvements. To enable this, you will be an expert in the following:
      - Mechanical cross sectioning and associated sample preparation
      - Chemical decapsulation of integrated circuits and associated optical/electron microscopy
      - X-ray inspection methods (2D and computed tomography)
      - Spectroscopy tools including EDS and XRF
      - Lab equipment maintenance

      This position may include up to 10% international and domestic travel.

      Basic qualifications:
      - 7+ years’ related work experience or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 3+ years’ related work experience
      - Experience with advanced materials and failure analysis techniques. Examples include X-ray, SEM/EDX, mechanical test, dye and pry, hardness testing, and 3D surface profiling
      - Experience with failure analysis methodology to derive a root-cause diagnosis of failure
      - Experience in performing bulk materials or electronics cross sections with associated physical/chemical measurements
      - Experience with lab safety best-practices

      Preferred qualifications
      - Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 7+ years’ work experience as a lab technician
      - Excellent written/communication skills
      - Experience writing SOP documents and lab reports
      - Willingness to independently troubleshoot and maintain scientific equipment, engaging equipment manufacturers when necessary for support
      - Experience with X-ray inspection (2D and computed tomography) with associated measurement software (VGSTUDIO or similar)
      - Experience with 3D CAD software (Solidworks or similar) and 3D printing for prototype fixtures







      A day in the life
      A day in the life of this role includes commuting into our lab facility, and after a quick sync with colleagues getting to work on addressing between one and four requests in your failure analysis job queue. The customers we serve in this queue are engineers from virtually all Amazon hardware organizations, so you'll find yourself working on components from drones, servers, industrial robotics and consumer electronics, all in a week's work! In this role it is important to rely on Sr staff as collaborators in problem solving and to maintain an organized workspace.

Our team includes materials scientists, chemists, metallurgists, and electronics manufacturing subject matter experts, enabling world-class failure analysis and materials selection consulting in a wide domain of engineering applications.

      Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $77,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $215,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
