Under the supervision of the Small Ruminant manager, manages all physical and animal husbandry aspects of the GDAL Swine Facility in support of teaching, research, and Extension missions. Responsible for all activities associated with the daily care and use of swine, including breeding, farrowing, feeding and nutrition, manure handling, and health of the swine herd. Assists the Small Ruminant manager with aspects of small ruminant husbandry. Maintains specialized equipment and physical facilities for swine and small ruminants. Maintains herd records and data; oversees swine and small ruminant student employees and interns, including training and scheduling. Assists veterinarians and faculty researchers with special animal procedures, such as surgery, collecting blood samples, and administering medications. Communicates and schedules with faculty, technicians, and students regarding the health, production, and management data essential for small ruminant and swine production. Supports swine and small ruminant instructional, research, and outreach activities. Interacts with industry stakeholders and visitors.
Job Duties:
60%: Swine Facility Management: Manages and performs all activities associated with the daily care and use of swine, including breeding, farrowing, feeding, nutrition, manure handling, and health of the swine herd. Operates and maintains specialized equipment and physical facilities. Maintains herd records and data. Oversees swine student employees and interns, including training and scheduling. Supports swine instructional, research, and outreach activities. Interacts with industry stakeholders and visitors.
40%: Small Ruminant Research & Education: Assists the Small Ruminant Research & Education Facility Manager in coordinating and executing research projects and management utilizing sheep and goats. Performs proper small ruminant husbandry duties and assists with research, including mixing feed, animal feeding, watering, and other tasks according to research and standard management protocols.
Location: Wooster, Ohio
Minimum Education Required: High school diploma or GED with 4 years relevant experience required. BQA livestock transport certification.
Required Qualifications:
• Experience in caring for swine, sheep, and goats.
• Ability to lift and carry 60 pounds for short distances.
• Valid Ohio Driver's License and experience with the operation of agricultural equipment.
Desired Qualifications: Associates degree with three years’ experience with swine and small ruminant production and research, including nutrition, breeding, and disease control.
