Interim Anaplan Architecture Lead

Job Description
- Req#: 26-07368
Position: Interim Anaplan Architecture Lead
Location: Framingham MA - Remote
Interview: Video
Duration: 6+ months
This is not a routine reporting or forecasting role. The hiring manager is looking for a specialist Anaplan architect/analyst who can stabilize and modernize a mature but messy model. The emphasis is on refactoring, transparency, governance, and enabling Staples to own the system internally after the engagement.
In short -- The role is about being a bridge between finance rules and Anaplan architecture, cleaning up complexity, and leaving behind a sustainable, well documented model that Staples can manage confidently.
*Onsite at Framingham, MA preferred but open to remote candidates (with travel as needed)*
Engagement Objective:
Staples FP&A relies on Anaplan as a core system for G&A expense, labor, capital, and inventory‐related reporting. Over time, business evolution (e.g., GCC expansion, labor capitalization changes, account and cost center updates) has outpaced the flexibility and transparency of the current Anaplan model.
The objective of this engagement is to stabilize, modernize, and de‐risk the existing Anaplan architecture so that:
Business rules are explicit and traceable
Changes can be made confidently and efficiently
Staples can internalize architectural ownership at the conclusion of the engagement
Scope of Responsibility
Model Architecture & Rule Transparency
Assess the current Anaplan model structure supporting G&A, labor, and capital, monthly and year-end reporting and processes
Identify high‐risk or opaque areas where:
Business rules are embedded directly in formulas
Logic is difficult to trace end‐to‐end
Produce a clear mapping of:
Key business rules
Where those rules currently live in the model
Recommended architectural improvements
Deliverable:
A concise "rule map” for priority domains (e.g., labor capitalization, GCC/PNI treatment, account and cost center mapping, year end rollover processes).
Architectural Refactoring (Targeted, Not a Rebuild)
Refactor selected areas of the model to:
Externalize business rules into driver or parameter modules rather than embedding them directly within formulas
Simplify or restructure complex calculation logic (including nested formulas and cross module dependencies) to improve transparency and maintainability
Improve model legibility, auditability, and change safety for future updates
Implement changes through appropriate model restructuring, formula updates, and module design adjustments where necessary to support the improved architecture
Preserve existing calculations and outputs wherever possible to minimize business disruption
Guiding principle:
Incremental improvement over wholesale redesign.
Change Governance & Guardrails
Define and document:
Which changes can be safely made by analysts or power users
Which changes require architectural review
Establish a lightweight change discipline:
Business intent → implementation → testing → sign‐off
Help Staples reduce trial‐and‐error changes in production models
Knowledge Transfer & Internalization
Partner with a designated Staples resource to:
Walk through architectural decisions
Explain why logic is structured a certain way
Ensure Staples is positioned to name an internal Anaplan architectural owner at the end of the engagement
This is a required outcome, not optional.
Explicitly Out of Scope
Routine report creation or maintenance
Ongoing forecast or budget cycle execution
Acting as the long‐term sole owner of Anaplan
"Black box” development with no documentation or walkthrough
Engagement Success Criteria
The engagement will be considered successful when:
Priority business rules are clearly traceable within the model
Key policy‐driven logic (e.g., labor capitalization, GCC treatment) is parameterized rather than hard‐coded
Staples FP&A can make most business changes through controlled inputs rather than formula edits
An internal architectural owner is identified and enabled
Ideal Candidate Profile (for vendor screening)
Deep Anaplan model‐building and architectural experience
Prior work modernizing or refactoring mature Anaplan models
Strong ability to translate business rules into scalable model design
Proven experience enabling internal teams (not just delivering outputs)
Comfortable operating in audit‐visible financial environments
