      Job Summary

TerraForm Power is seeking a motivated Electrical Engineering Intern to support the Engineering and Operations teams in maintaining and improving protection systems across our renewable energy portfolio. During this internship, you will gain hands-on exposure to power system protection, substation assets, and regulatory compliance requirements within a large-scale renewable energy platform. The role will focus on analyzing protection system maintenance records, supporting the development of standardized documentation and maintenance programs, and assisting with compliance efforts related to NERC PRC-005 standards.

This internship provides an opportunity to work with experienced engineers while developing practical skills in protection system maintenance, technical documentation review, and data analysis. The intern will collaborate with cross-functional teams to help improve inspection workflows, ensure data quality, and support reliable operation of wind, solar, and substation assets.

      Responsibilities

      • Support development and refinement of Protection System Maintenance Programs (PSMP) for wind, solar, and substation assets.
      • Create standardized templates, checklists, and documentation to ensure consistent application of PRC‑005 requirements across sites.
      • Evaluate inspection documentation against NERC PRC‑005 requirements, identifying gaps, inconsistencies, or missing data.
      • Review historical substation inspection records to assess completeness, accuracy, and alignment with internal standards.
      • Interpret technical drawings and protection schematics to support validation of asset inventories and protection maintenance scopes using engineering drawings and review tools.
      • Analyze protection system maintenance data for relays, batteries, transformers, and associated protection equipment.
      • Assist with building maintenance interval schedules for protection system components based on regulatory requirements, manufacturer guidance, and operational needs.
      • Collaborate with Engineering and Operations teams to gather additional information needed to close compliance gaps.
      • Support root‑cause review when maintenance activities appear incomplete or noncompliant.
      • Prepare summary reports and presentations communicating findings, trends, and recommended corrective actions.
      • Contribute to process improvement initiatives related to inspection workflows, compliance documentation, and data quality assurance.
      • Gain exposure to industry-standard protection and engineering software, which may include similar systems used by the Engineering team.

      Requirements

      • Currently enrolled as an Undergraduate (Junior or Senior) or Graduate student pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems emphasis preferred.
      • Academic focus or strong interest in Substation Design and/or Power System Protection.
      • Fundamental understanding of electrical power system components such as breakers, transformers, relays, and protection schemes.
      • Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, protection schematics, and substation drawings.
      • Strong attention to detail when reviewing technical documentation or compliance records.

      Qualifications

      • Coursework in Power Systems, Protection & Control, or Substation Engineering.
      • Analytical skills with the ability to review historical maintenance or inspection data for completeness and accuracy.
      • Strong communication skills for summarizing findings and collaborating with Engineering, Operations, and Compliance teams.
      • Organized, self-driven, and able to manage tasks with guidance from senior engineering staff.
      • Interest in learning about NERC PRC‑005, protection system maintenance intervals, and compliance documentation.
      • Prior internship or project experience related to substations, protection, renewables, or power engineering (preferred but not required).
