      JOB SUMMARY:

      Under direct supervision, provides non-instructional laboratory and operational support for the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program at Indian River State College. Supports instructors and students by organizing supplies, maintaining laboratory spaces, establishing and enforcing lab protocols, and ensuring that equipment and facilities meet safety, sanitation, and security standards. The Lab Assistant does not provide course instruction.

      SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      Instructor & Program Support

      • Assist HVAC/R instructors with organizing student supplies, tools, and instructional materials
      • Support instructors in implementing established lab protocols and procedures
      • Prepare and reset lab spaces before and after HVAC/R classes
      • Serve as a logistical support resource to ensure smooth lab operations

      Laboratory Protocols & Procedures

      • Assist in setting and maintaining lab protocols for HVAC/R classes in alignment with instructor direction and College safety standards
      • Establish and reinforce consistent lab procedures related to equipment use, storage, and housekeeping
      • Monitor lab environments to ensure students follow established safety and operational guidelines
      • Report safety concerns, equipment issues, or protocol violations promptly to instructors or program leadership

      Housekeeping & Lab Maintenance

      • Attend to all housekeeping tasks as established by HVAC/R instructors
      • Maintain a clean and sanitized storage area for tools, equipment, and materials
      • Thoroughly clean and sanitize lab stations, work areas, and shared spaces
      • Ensure lab spaces remain organized, safe, and inspection-ready

      Equipment Management & Security

      • Ensure all HVAC/R equipment and tools are cleaned and stored properly after each lab session
      • Confirm that, at the conclusion of each HVAC/R lab session, all equipment is secured, locked, and stored in designated areas
      • Assist with inventory tracking and report missing, damaged, or malfunctioning equipment
      • Support compliance with college policies related to equipment use, storage, and security

      Role Boundaries & Compliance

      • Operate strictly within a support role under instructor and program supervision
      • Ensure all activities align with college policies, safety regulations, and workforce program requirements
      • The HVAC/R Lab Assistant is not permitted to provide course instruction, technical teaching, or assessment of student learning
      • Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned

      QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

      • High school diploma or equivalent
      • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
      • Ability to follow established procedures and consistently enforce lab rules
      • Dependable, professional, and safety-focused work ethic

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Experience in a technical lab, workforce training, facilities, or shop environment
      • Familiarity with HVAC/R tools, equipment, or lab safety practices
      • Experience supporting instructors or students in a non-instructional role

      PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

      This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College. Depending on the Instructional Area, employees may also have the following physical requirements:

      Ability to work in lab environments, including standing, lifting light equipment, and performing cleaning tasks

      Exposure to HVAC/R lab conditions, including tools, equipment, noise, and cleaning materials

      Schedule may include evenings or weekends based on class schedules
