      Monday to Friday - 08:30-16:30 with occasional weekend working - 37.5hrs per week

      Static position

      An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent static Band 6 Occupational Therapist covering orthopaedic inpatients. The majority of the caseload is adults but there is also some provision for the paediatric orthopaedic service.

      The post provides the opportunity to develop your knowledge, clinical and leadership skills and the successful candidate will be part of the friendly, supportive and forward-thinking orthopaedic therapy team.

      Job responsibilities:

      Clinical and professional

      • To be professionally accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care, complying at all times with the HCPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics and the RCOT Professional standards for occupational therapy practice, conduct and ethics. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management and support staff to do likewise.
      • To employ professional judgement to establish a level of consent and to work within the Trust and departmental policy to treat patients lacking the capacity to provide consent.

      • To undertake complex, comprehensive assessments of patients using investigative, observational, analytical and problem-solving skills. To formulate individualised treatment and management plans using advanced clinical reasoning.

      • To communicate effectively with patients and carers, ensuring understanding of the conditions, aim of therapy treatment and progression. A high level of skill and empathy is required to communicate effectively with patients who have complex emotional, physical and psychological problems and carers/family members who may be emotionally impacted.

      • To be responsible for accessing confidential information via IT systems and recording patient contact data for statistical analysis and audit purposes

      • To provide expert treatment to patients using therapy techniques, specialist equipment and therapeutic handling. To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to patients, carers, other team members including students to enable progression, discharge or onward referral.

      • To communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a positive manner with all other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the safe delivery of co-ordinated and seamless care. This will include sharing assessment findings, goals and plans, outcomes of treatment, personal and clinical details. Referral on to other agencies is an essential part of this role.

      • To communicate closely with external agencies enabling supportive discharges.

      • To maintain accurate and comprehensive patient notes in accordance with the HCPC, Trust and departmental guidelines and standards. To communicate assessment and treatment results to appropriate disciplines verbally and in written reports, whilst abiding by the protocol on confidentiality at all times.

      • To be flexible to provide occupational therapy for other wards and teams as needed. To attend meetings and training as required by the team or professional lead.       Communication and team working

      • To communicate with patients with multiple physical/mental health problems ensuring a sensitive approach to engage them in treatment programmes. This will involve motivating patients and agreeing treatment goals, communicating patients progress, treatment and recommendations to ensure good communication and timely arrangements for care in the community.

      • To ensure positive and effective communication with the ward staff and team members, raising any issues in a timely manner initially with the team lead.

      • To attend ward-based meetings, handovers, ward rounds, MDT meetings and case conferences as appropriate.
