      JOB SUMMARY

      Legal Services provides a comprehensive and complex range of legal services to elected officials, all City of Ottawa departments, and various boards and commissions (i.e. Ottawa Police Services Board, Ottawa Community Land Development Corporation and the Ottawa Public Library), in the areas of civil litigation, labour and employment law, prosecutions, and corporate, municipal, planning, development, environmental, and commercial law.

      As the subject matter expert, you provide advice and information to elected officials, City staff, insurance brokers, community associations and partners, and representatives of business improvement initiatives/organizations with respect to the City’s insurance requirements, policies, terms and conditions of the Integrated Risk Program and the standalone insurance policies outside the program.

      You are also responsible for fulfillment of the insurance function including working collaboratively with the City’s broker by delivering quality service, controlling contract administration for insurance and indemnification requirements, verifying that contracts are current, complete and accurate and have adequate insurance, and developing insurance-related procedures.

      EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

      Completion of 3 year degree in Business or a related field

      Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible insurance experience within a municipal or corporate environment

      CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

      Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation with Insurance Institute of Canada

      KNOWLEDGE

      • Insurance acquisition, including brokerage, market conditions, trends and pricing, and risk financing techniques
      • Insurance broker services procurement preparation and process
      • Contract administration specifically in the areas of insurance, indemnification and risk transfer
      • Insurance law, contract law
      • Transit insurance administration practices
      • Research concerning statistical and financial industry information including the identification of trends and report writing
      • Risk management best practices, mitigation strategies, and information systems

      Desirable Qualifications:

      • Knowledge of municipal law, City of Ottawa insurance policies and claims processes as well as common risks and dangers in municipal operations
      • Knowledge of City of Ottawa organization and governance, policies and procedures
