      Job summary

      We require an enthusiastic Phlebotomist to work as part of our team within the hospital and community hub. Core hours are 08:00 to 17:00. There will also be an expectation to work flexibly on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday mornings when required.

      You will be part of a team providing a valuable support function for the entire hospital collecting blood samples from Inpatients on Derriford's wards and also from our patients in the outpatient clinics Applicants must have a basic general education and knowledge of phlebotomy; excellent communication skills, be able to deal with patients and staff with tact and diplomacy; and the ability to work in a busy environment.

      The successful candidates will be expected to train during the core working week. Payment for training will be made at AfC band 2 Standard rate. Arrangements for training will be discussed at interview.

      The hours of work can be discussed at interview. Please note that the service is evolving as demand increasing so there will be an expectation to participate in rotas that offer a 7 day service which can be between the hours of 6am and 6pm.

      Main duties of the job

      1. Principle duties are to collect specimens of blood from patients attending UHP Dartmoor Building, Wards and L3 drop in service Plymouth.
      2. To ensure samples and request forms match with the patient and are labelled correctly for delivery to the Pathology Directorate.
      3. The post holder will work as part of a team providing a timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective phlebotomy service for both inpatients and outpatients.

      2. To liaise with patients, carers, nursing and medical staff in an appropriate and professional manner.
      3. Informing patients of the venepuncture procedure to be carried out in a caring reassuring manner that is aimed at their level of understanding.
      4. Ensure suitable stocks of venepuncture equipment are available prior to visiting patients and replenish used stock as required.
      5. Ensure that requests for blood are correctly filled in with the minimum acceptance data present.
      6. Ensure that all samples collected are correctly labelled and meet the acceptance criteria for the Pathology department concerned.
      7. Have the ability to assess if veins are suitable for venepuncture, following standard operating procedures. Eg Avoiding Intra Venous/transfusion sites.
      8. Recognise the needs of the patient, who may be very anxious or distressed due to the nature of their illness or the procedure, whilst being sympathetic and considerate towards them.
      9. Will assist the training officer in the training of new staff.
      10. Be familiar and competent in the use of Pathology computer systems iLAB & iCM for patient test request entry.
