      Job Overview:

      Klawock Hours: M-F, 6:30am-3:30pm, with possible rotating Saturdays.

      General Description:

      • The position functions within the Behavioral Health Division to provide clinical psychiatric care and addiction medicine for SEARHC patients, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of substance use, mental, and emotional disorders. The physician manages integrated medical care for patients participating in the Sitka and Klawock Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP), Sitka Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program, and provides general psychiatry services based out of Sitka. The position requires regular travel from Sitka to Klawock for patient care and OTP oversight. Services are primarily outpatient in nature but may include consultation-liaison and emergency department support in some locations. The physician works collaboratively with the Clinical Director for Addiction Services to provide addiction medicine expertise and medical staff leadership. The physician is an active member of the interdisciplinary behavioral health team.

      Responsibilities:

      Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

      • Provides highest quality evidence-based substance use disorder treatment and psychiatric clinical care to SEARHC patients including psychiatric evaluations, psychotherapy, psychopharmacological therapy, psychiatric emergency triage, hospital consultation and liaison, and other appropriate treatments in the outpatient setting.
      • Leads the Sitka and Klawock OTPs, providing direct patient care, team leadership, and clinical guidance and oversight in accordance with SAMHSA, DEA, and The Joint Commission regulatory standards. The physician will travel regularly to Klawock for patient evaluations and follow-up care in addition to regular telehealth-based interventions.
      • Performs differential diagnosis, level of care, and treatment interventions based upon evaluation and synthesis of the clinical information available and coordinates treatment with internal and external medical providers and other systems of care.
      • Treats complex and seriously ill patients while providing education, consultation and support for patients, their families, and other behavioral health and medical providers.
      • Places the patient at the center of care utilizing strong listening and communication skills, patient education, encouragement, and motivational techniques to build successful ongoing patient care relationships.
      • Works collaboratively with the treatment team to support patient care reflective of SEARHC values of respect, cultural identity, service, professionalism, and compassion.
      • Provides psychiatric consultation and clinical advice for SEARHC medical staff colleagues.
      • Documents all patient services in the medical record per SEARHC medical staff rules and regulations.
      • Approaches patients in a trauma informed responsible, respectful, and caring manner to promote the most effective therapeutic relationship.
      • Collaborates in a positive manner with all health care professionals.
      • Embraces and demonstrates cultural competence in communication with patients, families, and community members.
      • Provides clinical supervision, coaching, mentoring, teaching, and guidance to behavioral health and substance use disorder staff to ensure implementation of current best practice.
      • When indicated, supports the advancement of psychiatric residents with clinical supervision, coaching, mentoring, and teaching.
      • Diligently maintains professional and business confidentiality per SEARHC standards and federal guidelines.
      • Provides consultation and guidance to non-physician psychiatric medical staff providers and when necessary, provides supervision and practice plan oversight.
      • Participates and supports expected activities and committees of the Medical Staff Office.

      Qualifications:

      Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required

      • MD or DO degree.
      • Satisfactory Completion of AMA approved psychiatric residency program.
      • Addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry fellowship trained physician preferred.
      • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Alaska.
      • Active DEA Registration.
      • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry. If Board Eligible, at the time of hire, must be Board Certified within 3 years of start date.
      • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Addiction Medicine Subspecialty from a recognized certifying organization. If Board Eligible, at the time of hire, must be Board Certified within 3 years of start date.
      • Ongoing current certification for clinical practice (e.g., BLS, PALS, and/or ACLS as required by practice location(s)).

      Knowledge of

      • Demonstrated knowledge of current best practice clinical psychiatric techniques as they apply to patient assessment, diagnosis, and/or treatment of mentally, emotionally, and developmentally disordered patients including substance abuse.
      • Demonstrated knowledge and application of current theories, literature, recent developments, and best practices in the field of substance use disorder and mental health to maintain standards of care in keeping with practice.
      • Up-to-date knowledge of psychopharmacology and use of psychiatric medications.
      • Demonstrated knowledge of medical staff bylaws, clinical services policies/procedures, ethical standards.

      Skills in

      • Proficient in oral and written communication skills, such as documentation in progress notes, narrative summaries, and reports; and effective communication with diverse patient populations.
      • Clinical analytical judgment skills to assess complex situations, including emergencies with high-risk patients, integrate various sources of information, and make appropriate diagnoses, clinical decisions, and plans of care.
      • Skill in developing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with patients, families, and internal colleagues and staff and external health care professionals.

      Ability to

      • Ability to be empathic, understanding, and respectful towards staff and patients to create a positive working environment.
      • Demonstrate personal and professional integrity in the application of ethical principles and community standards of care in interactions with patients, family and staff, and manifest upstanding moral character during the course work and treatment.
      • Ability to be accessible to staff, share ideas, and demonstrate professional bearing under pressure and during conflicts.
      • Comfortable with regular travel to SEARHC communities (e.g., Klawock).
      • Maintain the utmost confidentiality with sensitive organizational business and healthcare information.
