      The Role: Research Specialist – ESG Controversy Research (2 open positions)

      We are looking for a Research Specialist to join our a new and growing ESG Controversy team within the Sustainability Research department. We are looking for a seasoned and motivated individual who is passionate about sustainability and ESG controversies by delivering robust, timely and thorough analysis. As a team player, you will be a fundamental pillar of the further build-up of the team in the next following months.

      The Team:

      The ESG Controversy team is a new analytical effort which is expected to have a significant growth in the short term supported by S&P Global’s Sustainability Research department. The latter is dedicated to developing innovative ESG analytical solutions and overseeing the renowned Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). The department is responsible for developing the methodology to analyze corporate sustainability performance systematically and accurately, and for managing our proprietary database, comprising one of the world’s most complete datasets on corporate sustainability. The ESG Controversy team is aimed to develop, support, and maintain S&P´s monitoring of companies ‘sustainability performance daily by assessing controversies with potentially negative environmental or social impacts which may pose reputational, or financial consequences for companies. We are considered a leader in ESG analytics, providing essential intelligence to corporates and financial institutions.

      The Impact:

      Developed over 22 years, our work contributes to the creation of the iconic Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) and the S&P 500® ESG index, among many others. Our work is also used by investors to execute their respective responsible investment strategies such as in the creation of impact and thematic funds. The work intelligence produced by our department is leveraged throughout S&P Global’s ESG products across its divisions.

      We are searching for people that are passionate about sustainability and would like to join a project-focused, international team of like-minded people, driven to deliver excellence in managing the world’s most known family of sustainability indices and one of the leading corporate sustainability benchmarking methodologies.

      Responsibilities:

      • The Research Specialist will be a fundamental pillar of the "human intelligence" element that we want to implement within the ESG Controversy suite of products.
      • At the initial phase, the SRS will be focused on the design and training of the machine learning models by providing and analyzing data and content that will feed the algorithms. These models will be the base of our ESG Controversy suite of products. In this phase, the SRS will be a crucial player on the build-up of the future team as needs quickly ramp up.
      • At the maintenance phase, the SRS will be the third line of defense in the analysis of controversies by checking and approving the analytical work done by junior members of the team. The latter will read and analyze the ESG controversy signals detected by the machine learning models.
      • The quality check done by the SRS will be key a step in the analysis of controversies as it will have a dual impact: a) provide critical feedback to the algorithms to ensure constant improvement and enhancement and b) the validation of the signal will the base for the team to analyze the impact of the controversy case.

      What We’re Looking For:

      Basic Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree or equivalent; an advanced degree in a related field is welcome
      • 4 years of experience in a sustainability related role is mandatory.
      • Experience in analysis of ESG controversies and reputational risk assessment
      • Team leadership skills
      • Effective written and spoken communication using the English language
      • Excellent attention to detail is required
      • Comprehensive research skills focusing on data and fact-based insights
      • Effective critical and analytical thinking

      Soft Skills:

      • Strong interest in corporate sustainability
      • Healthy curiosity to uncover corporate involvements in different controversies
      • Ability to work independently yet towards team goals
      • Collaborative attitude across different locations
      • Reliable and able to go the extra mile when required

      Desired Qualifications:

      • Prior experience in dealing and interacting with machine learning models
      • Prior experience in the ESG data ratings and research is an added advantage
      • Skills in Excel (macros) or Qlik or Tableau or SQL

      Grade level: 8 (relevant for internal applicants only)
