      Job Description Summary:
      The mission of William & Mary's Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences & Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) is to seek and broadly communicate knowledge in marine and coastal science to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through research, education, and advisory service. The Batten School & VIMS make seminal advances in understanding coastal and marine systems through research and discovery, translate research findings into practical solutions to complex issues of societal importance, and provide new generations of researchers, educators, problem solvers, and managers with an education of unsurpassed quality.

      The Communities & Coasts Lab is a human-centered coastal and marine science research group at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Research is often applied, participatory, and focuses broadly on coastal industries and community change. The Marine Economies Lab uses applied economic approaches to study pressing questions for coastal communities in the areas of fisheries, aquaculture, habitat management, and pollution.
      The Communities & Coasts Lab and the Marine Economies Lab seek a research specialist to fill the role of lab manager, overseeing and contributing to research activities in both groups. As lab manager, the hired employee would:
      • Manage current awards, including purchasing, reporting, and budget planning
      • Contribute to active research projects, utilizing social science methodologies to answer pressing coastal and marine resource questions
      • Assist with the identification of funding opportunities and development of grant proposals
      • Lead and support social science data collection and analysis
      • Assist with and/or lead manuscript development
      • Support student-led research, assisting in data collection and project guidance.

      Job Description:

      Required Qualifications
      Education:

      Bachelor's degree in a related field required
      Competencies:
      • Willingness to meet research participants on site, often in outdoor settings, on the water, or at business operations.
      • Ability to effectively organize and manage multiple projects with overlapping deadlines.
      • Ability to oversee scheduling and use of shared laboratory space and equipment
      • Ability to write technical reports describing social science research methods and findings.
      Experience:
      • Experience in qualitative data collection, specifically experience in conducting semi-structured interviews and/or focus groups along with related data handling and analysis.
      • Experience collecting, maintaining, and analyzing quantitative socioeconomic data, including surveys and market data.
      • Familiarity with human subjects research and associated policies.

      Preferred Qualifications:
      Education:

      Master's degree and/or advanced technical specialization preferred
      Competencies:
      • Familiarity with US seafood industry, particularly bivalve shellfish and aquaculture
      • Active certification in human subjects research (e.g., through the CITI Training Program)
      • Familiarity with qualitative (e.g., Nvivo, MAXQDA) and quantitative (e.g., R) data analysis software.
      Experience:
      • Experience publishing social science research
      • Experience in grant writing, funding acquisition and management


      Salary-up to $60,000.00

      Conditions of Employment:
      • Frequent travel for data collection, meeting with industry and stakeholders, attending conferences, etc. 2-8 weeks/yr
      • This is a restricted position, subject to the availability of funding.

      Core Duty and Responsibilities:

      Research project management, grant administration, and lab coordination - 30%
      • Manage active research awards across the Communities & Coasts and Marine Economies Labs.
      • Coordinate purchasing, budget tracking, reporting, and compliance with university and sponsor requirements.
      • Assist with project planning, timelines, and coordination among research team members and collaborators.
      • Support general coordination of lab activities across both research groups.
      • Assist with coordination of meetings, workshops, or stakeholder engagement activities as needed.

      Social science research implementation and data analysis - 30%
      • Lead and support data collection for social science research projects, including survey and interview design, focus groups, and field-based data collection.
      • Conduct quantitative and qualitative data analysis using appropriate statistical and analytical methods.
      • Manage research datasets and ensure data quality, documentation, and adherence to human subjects research protocols.

      Grant development and funding support - 15%
      • Identify relevant funding opportunities from federal, state, and private sponsors.
      • Contribute to the preparation and submission of grant proposals, including literature reviews, research design, budgets, and supporting materials.
      • Assist with development of project narratives and supporting documentation.

      Manuscript development and research dissemination - 15%
      • Contribute to writing and editing of peer-reviewed journal articles, technical reports, and other research outputs.
      • Assist with preparation of figures, tables, and supporting materials for publication.
      • Support dissemination of research findings through presentations and outreach materials.


      Additional Job Description:

      Participates or leads in the design, modification and performance of laboratory or research projects.
      Frequent contact with private business, other state agencies or government entities, principal investigators, faculty, laboratory staff, students and researchers, and/or the general public to report and interpret results, provide consultation and technical assistance, and discuss research projects.
      Responsibilities include: participating in or leading work in the design, modification, evaluation and performance of laboratory, field surveys or research procedures; writing or modifying computer programs to analyze data and generate reports; researching literature related to project/procedures; conducting experiments; writing segments of reports and manuscripts; coordinating grants and budgets; assisting lower level staff; troubleshooting instrument problems and performing preventive maintenance on equipment.
