      POSITION TITLE: School Nutrition Support Specialist

      FLSA: Exempt

      REPORTS TO: Supervisor of School Nutrition

      TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      REQUIRED:

        • High school diploma
        • School food service experience or a similar institutional food service role
        • Food safety manager’s certification in a nationally accredited program

      • Proficient knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word, and Excel, internet research, Gmail for sending reports and attachments, and the ability to quickly grasp other computer technologies
      • Effective communication and team building skills
      • Ability to look ahead to determine what work needs to be done before being asked
      • Reliable in producing accurate work with minimal supervision
      • Takes pride in work and is committed to accuracy and correctness
      • Excellent attendance and punctuality
      • Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
      • Must have the ability to reach, and stoop and the physical agility to lift up to 30 pounds.

      ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

        • Oversees the ordering of all food, fresh produce, paper and chemical items.

      • Ensures managers submit weekly orders on time.
      • Receives and analyzes all orders for accuracy.
      • Submits orders to the appropriate distributor.
      • Effectively communicates with staff and distributors regarding order inaccuracies.

        • Serves as the contact between the cafeteria managers and the distributors for order modifications and substitutions.
        • Submits credit requests to distributors for damaged, spoiled and outdated stock.
        • Coordinates food transfers or sharing of resources between schools .
      • Assists school nutrition managers with daily operational issues.
        • Responds to all phone calls and texts messages promptly.
        • Seeks to provide professional and accurate answers to questions regarding program operations.

      • Visits school sites regularly.
        • Ensures attractive appearance of foods, proper portion control, and compliance with local, state, and Federal regulations.
        • Assists cafeteria staff in improving methods and techniques for food preparation, storage, service and sanitation.
        • Reviews food production records and ensures accurate completion.
        • Performs routine physical inventory checks to verify accurate ordering and proper storage.
        • Identifies and recommends improvements in school nutrition operations.
        • Ensures that each school’s food service operation is following all safety and sanitation standards.
        • Ensures cashiers are operating the point-of-sale system in an effective and efficient manner.
      • Compiles data for the Food Production Record tool to assist cafeteria staff in food production and program regulation compliance.
      • Assists the School Nutrition Supervisor in reviewing all school cafeteria programs, including the NSLP, SBP, CACFP, and SFSP for compliance with federal and state guidelines.
      • Designs and formats the menu signage requirements.
      • Provides cafeteria workers with point-of-sale training on computerized point-of- sale systems as needed.
      • Researches and develops new recipes.
      • Assists in the development and revision of standardized recipes.
      • Substitutes for school nutrition managers when necessary.
      • Monitors and assists schools in complying with Virginia Department of Health food safety regulations.
      • Assists cafeteria managers in maintaining up-to-date safety data sheets of all chemicals used in school cafeterias.
      • Maintains up-to-date reference notebook of food labels that will assist in accommodating children with special dietary needs.



      OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

      • Performs other related tasks and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor of School Nutrition.
