Job summary

Alder Hey is the Level 1 Centre in the North West of England providing Congenital Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiac Service with a total population in this catchment area of over 7.5 million, making it one of the largest Paediatric Cardiac Surgical Units in the country. It is one of only four stand-alone paediatric trusts in the UK and is staffed by 2,800 employees.
The successful candidate will join a team providing specialist Perfusion services for children with all forms of heart disease from Merseyside, the North West Region, North and Mid Wales and the Isle of Man with a catchment population of approximately 7 million people. There has been a measured and systematic approach to developing and strengthening the cardiac surgical capability at Alder Hey over recent years. This has allowed the team to build up the capacity to perform high quality surgery. The strategic commitment is to continue with that programme with the unit performing approximately 520 procedures each year, approximately 250-300 of them requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. As well as providing cardiopulmonary bypass the perfusion department is responsible for providing a Cardiac and Respiratory ECMO service as an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Main duties of the job
As part of the surgical team provide perfusion and associated services for surgical, diagnostic and support procedures ensuring a high standard of patient care.
Prepare, set up and maintain and check all perfusion related equipment so that they are clean, safe and in good working order.
To provide ECMO service for Cardiac Theatre and the Intensive Care Unit.
To provide Cell Salvage service as required by patients in the Cardiac Department and elsewhere in the Trust when necessary.
Liaise with multidisciplinary team to promote and maintain the highest standard of patient care.
Participate in the training and supervision of new staff and student placements and participate in the interdepartmental cover arrangements for absent colleagues.
Ensure the cost effective use of resources.
Participate in the department out of hours on-call system
About us
Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of Europe's biggest and busiest children's hospitals providing care for over 200,000 children and young people each year. It is one of only four stand-alone paediatric trusts in UK and is staffed by 2,800 employees.Alder Hey offers 20 specialist services including being the designated national centre for Craniofacial Surgery and a Centre of Excellence for Paediatric Oncology, Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology and Orthopaedics. It is a teaching hospital and trains 550 medical and 400 nursing students each year. A child and adolescent mental health service is also provided with an in-patient unit based at the Trust. Recent expansion has seen the provision of additional theatres (there are 13 operating Theatres in total) and the opening of a new Neurosciences development.
Alder Hey serves not only the children of Liverpool but is the tertiary referral centre for children from Merseyside, Cheshire, parts of Lancashire, Shropshire and North Wales for many sub-specialties of paediatrics. The Trust provides a range of community services including school nursing, home carers and a child development centre. The hospital has over 300 beds, including day beds for surgery, a medical day care unit and Emergency Decision Unit.
A purpose-built Education Centre is situated on the hospital site and is available for all postgraduate educational activity.
