      L3Harris’ Communication Systems segment is currently seeking a Senior TEMPEST Engineer Engineer to join our team . This position will be based at our Salt Lake City, UT facility.

      Position Overview:

      The Senior TEMPEST Engineer will be part of the key engineering team that is responsible for design support of circuit cards and systems to meet TEMPEST requirements, writing the TEMPEST Plans and Testing. At L3HARRIS BCS, we design and develop electronic communications products that range from multiple racks of custom and commercial equipment to individual electronics modules. Many of these products are required to pass cryptographic TEMPEST tests. Tasks in the job position include developing cost estimates for the tasks that the TEMPEST lab performs; performing cost account management of TEMPEST tasks; participating in the equipment design cycle as a consultant to minimize TEMPEST issues; analysis of requirements; writing of control and test plans; assisting in test setup; design and build of special test equipment; supervising and running tests; and writing test reports. Analysis and debug may be required if equipment exhibits issues during testing.

      Essential Responsibilities:

      • Participate in the proposal process for programs with a TEMPEST requirement.
      • Perform design and test activities to achieve TEMPEST compliance.
      • Support both system and sub-system development efforts and design reviews, including sub-system partitioning, packaging, internal and external cable design, grounding and isolation requirements, CCA layout recommendations, schematic development, trade studies, analysis and simulation activities.
      • Perform simulations with SPICE or other EMI/EMC simulation tools to predict CCA-level and system-level TEMPEST performance, and also understand anomalies observed during hardware testing.
      • Conduct and participate in design reviews.
      • Create a TEMPEST Control Plan, Test Plan, Test Procedure, Test Report, Critical Features List and other applicable documents.
      • Perform required pre-test setup, Detection System Sensitivity and calibration measurements prior to testing.
      • Direct TEMPEST testing activities and participate in TEMPEST related system and sub-system troubleshooting efforts.
      • Interface with other members of the program engineering team, Govt/NSA TEMPEST experts, and the customer as required.
      • Interface with external suppliers to upgrade their products for TEMPEST compliance, when necessary.
      • Provide in-house training seminars and individual mentoring to electrical, mechanical, RF and system engineers, manufacturing personnel, management staff and customers on various aspects of TEMPEST design.

      Required Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
      • Certified TEMPEST Professional - Level I, (Level II preferred).
      • A working knowledge of electromagnetic theory, radiated and conducted emissions, signal and power coupling effects, and susceptibility of systems.
      • Experience with TEMPEST design techniques for wide-band, high-isolation performance, containment, source suppression and RF grounding.
      • Experience with TEMPEST design for compliance to NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-92 and CNSSAM TEMPEST/01-02 requirements, including TEMPEST product testing.
      • Knowledge of NSTISSAM TEMPEST/2-91, NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-95, CNSSAM TEMPEST/1-13, SDIP-27, and DoD/DoE requirements is also preferred.
      • Experience with common lab equipment, such as: Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzers, TEMPEST Receivers, Signal Generators, Test Antennas, EMI Chambers, etc.
      • U.S. Citizenship.
      • U.S. Government secret security clearance.
      • Ability to travel 15% domestically.

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • Radio frequency communications.
      • MIL-STD-461 EMI/EMC testing.
      • Use of laboratory test equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.).
      • RF Test equipment, antennas.
      • A background in:
        • RF communication theory and design
        • Communications system design
      • This position may be filled at a higher grade based on the successful applicant's skills, education and experience.
