      Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The mission of the Genetics department is to provide basic and applied genetic/genomic research, education, and training at the interface between biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, mathematics, the social sciences, public health, and medicine to have a profound effect on how medicine will be practiced in the future.

Our graduate programs train students to be creative, sophisticated research scientists prepared to pursue careers focused on genetics and genomics working in academic science, government, or commercial positions. Students conduct their dissertation research using diverse experimental approaches – from classical genetics to the most modern molecular methods – to address a broad range of contemporary problems in biomedical science.

The Department also includes a clinical arm focused on medical genetics, which covers the broad spectrum of clinical genetic research from disease prevention to diagnosis and treatment. This specialty includes evaluation, mutation discovery, counseling and risk assessment through analysis and genetic testing. Locating the clinical group alongside basic scientists facilitates integration of cutting-edge genetic research with patient care.

      Position Summary

The purpose of the Social/Clinical Research Specialist (Coordinator) will be primarily to support ongoing efforts underway in the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) research program directed by Dr. Jonathan Berg at UNC. Coordination will entail assisting ClinGen Clinical Domain Working Groups (CDWGs) and Expert Panels (EPs) in providing an organizing framework for disease-specific expert groups to curate relevant genes and variants. The successful candidate will work with other ClinGen coordinators, the UNC Biocuration Core, and national and international collaborators to enable the CDWGs and EPs to uphold the highest standard of curation and expert interpretation of clinically relevant genes and variants.
The selected candidate will be expected to schedule, host, and participate in CDWG and EP calls with members of the expert groups, some of which may be outside of normal business hours. Successful job performance will require learning and implementing the protocols developed by ClinGen, under supervision and training from senior staff. He or she will also be required lab and research meetings within UNC.
Work Planning: Schedule calls, teleconferences and in-person meetings for CDWGs and EPs. Keep, transcribe, and post meeting minutes on internal website within one week of the call. Assist in determining timelines for accomplishing assigned work with input from CDWG and EP co-chairs. Request agenda from co-chairs and provide to WG members. Maintain a schedule for WG task leader to provide updates to the SC. Maintain appropriate and up-to-date documentation, webpages, and social media.
Internal & External Communication: Correspond and follow-up with co-chairs, domain experts, curators and other ClinGen consortium members. Maintain an active roster of the WG and help communicate the group’s goals to the public (e.g., regularly maintain the public website with WG products).
Meet semi-annually at professional meetings and conferences for updates, discussions, and horizon scanning which can include leading break-out teams to accomplish specific WG goals, presenting talks and posters, and initiating relevant discussions with external groups and potential contributors. Heighten global awareness of ClinGen through in-person presentations and networking at professional society meetings and conferences.
Data Analysis & Presentation of Results: Log and participate in the activities of the Working Group as discussed with the chair and co-chairs. Maintain thorough and appropriate documentation of results. Assist in preparation of research findings using standard computer software (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, web-based interface). Communicate with NHGRI, PIs, Director, and other consortium members to ensure that the WG’s activities are accurately and comprehensively reported in the bi-annual progress reports.
