      Job summary

      Specialist Dietitian, Nutrition Support Team. Band 7 Full Time

      The Nutrition Support Team (NST) are delighted to be recruiting specialist dietitians to work within our evolving service.

      These are pivotal roles designed for those who thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment and possess a passion for managing patients with complex medical and surgical needs.

      As a core member of the NST, you will be working alongside our MDT including dedicated Nutrition Support Nurses and Specialist Pharmacists.

      We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and motivated dietitian with experience in parenteral nutrition and management of complex caseloads to join our team. The role involves cross site MDT working with inpatients and outpatients in adult services. You will work as part of a team and will need to liaise with professionals at all levels, be able to prioritise your workload, be flexible and assertive. You will be working within a busy, growing NST under the direction of the NST Lead Nurse with support from the Dietetic Clinical Lead.

      Main duties of the job

      • Expert clinical care: as an advanced dietitian you will work with peers in the NST to lead decisions regarding parenteral nutrition, providing advanced assessments and monitoring for patients with intestinal failure.

      • MDT working: NST ward rounds and weekly MDT meetings contributing to clinical assessment and management of complex patients.

      • Innovation and education: Work with other NST members on trust-wide audits, policy development and training of junior staff and medical teams across the trust on topics such as refeeding syndrome and parenteral nutrition safety.

      About You:

      As a registered dietitian with significant post-qualification experience in an acute setting, you'll be passionate about improving outcomes for patients with complex nutritional needs. Proven leadership experience, possibly including managing a team and should be able to demonstrate previous work towards service development and development of protocols and procedures. You are able to work autonomously, managing complex caseloads but also collaborate with peers and junior/senior colleagues to ensure the best outcome for patients. You are ready to step into this exciting role in a developing team where your voice will be heard and your specialist knowledge respected.

      Job Summary

      You will be required to provide specialist dietetic advice on the nutritional management of complex patients requiring nutrition support. You will be required to work as a team to help manage all aspects of nutritional input for these patients and manage a highly specialised caseload of patients including those requiring parenteral nutrition, and those with complex enteral feeding needs. You will work as a core member of the multidisciplinary Nutrition Support Team. The nutrition support team service includes both inpatients and outpatients.

      You will act as a specialist adviser and educator to other health care professionals including dietetic colleagues regarding nutrition support.

      Key Responsibilities:

      Clinical

      • The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner working with other members of the multi-professional team to provide a specialist dietetic service to patients, carers and health professionals by:
      • Holistically assess patient suitability for artificial nutritional support including parenteral and enteral nutrition. Counsel patients/carers with regards to explanation of procedure, quality of life issues, training requirements, support available and complications associated with treatment.
      • Carry out nutritional assessment to determine nutritional status and dietetic intervention.
      • Provide dietetic support for complex patients discussed at any nutrition support team MDT meeting (e.g., PEG MDT).
      • To act as a source of expertise on nutrition support (including parenteral and enteral feeding) and the nutritional implications of complex gastrointestinal disorders, advising and supporting other members of the multidisciplinary team and other health / care workers as appropriate, helping those who are in a position to provide nutritional advice and influence practices within the specialty, aiming to give accurate consistent nutritional messages to clients.
      • Promote patient autonomy through education and support allowing the individual to make informed choices about their own care.
      • To assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care, co-ordinating the holistic needs of the patients.
      • To provide continuity of care for ward discharges and act as a point of contact for patients.
      • The post holder will work with other members of the nutrition support team undertaking regular nutrition ward rounds, as well as independent assessment of patients on parenteral or enteral feeding as required.
      • Communicate complex and sensitive information to families in partnership with the multidisciplinary team regarding end-of-life artificial nutrition related issues.
      • To report any untoward incidents / accidents to Lead Nutrition CNS and complete Datix incidents when required.
