      Job summary

      An exciting opportunity has arisen as a permanent Band 4, within the Quality and Patient Safety Team at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board working closely with a multi disciplinary team (MDT) through the patients Trauma Pathway. This MDT also works closely with the South Wales Trauma Network (SWTN) and other Health Boards across South Wales.

      Trauma Audit Research Network (TARN) is a collaboration formed of hospitals from all over England, Wales, Ireland and other parts of Europe.

      Main duties of the job

      We are looking for a confident individual with a strong administration background with intermediate skills on all Microsoft office applications and preferably with experience of medical terminology and knowledge of NHS Wales.

      We require good attention to detail skills and accuracy skills in transposing clinical data from internal sources (PAS, RADiS etc.) into the TARN database.

      Communication with the Trauma Team in Aneurin Bevan and Trauma Teams and TARN coordinatorsin other Health Boards.

      The Health Board trauma call numbers makes this a busy and demanding role.

      The Trauma Audit & Research Network (TARN) is a collaboration formed of hospitals from all over England, Wales, Ireland and other parts of Europe. The TARN database is the largest trauma database in Europe with more than 200,000 cases including over 22,000 paediatric patients, with the remit of collecting and analysing clinical and epidemiological data, to provide a statistical base to support clinical audit, to aid the development of trauma services and to inform the research agenda.

      As part of the establishment of the South Wales Trauma Network, there is a requirement to enhance Health Board wide collection and submission of data to TARN. In Wales, submission of data to TARN by Health Boards is considered mandatory under the annual national clinical audit and outcome review annual plan and is a requirement of service specification for the network. TARN data collection is fundamental for improving the quality of care for trauma patients and lead to improvements in outcome.

      As well as being employed by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and working as a core member of the Quality and Safety team, the successful post-holder will receive support from clinical and managerial leads within the Trauma Unit, trauma coordinator, rehabilitation coordinator and the network management team. As part of the new Major Trauma Network across South Wales, the trauma unit at The Grange University Hospital will have important role to play and will provide care for injured patients through:

      1. Optimisation of definitive care of injured patients. In particular, it has an active, effective trauma quality improvement programme. It also provides a managed transition to rehabilitation and the community.
      2. Having systems in place to rapidly move the most severely injured to hospitals that can manage their injuries.
      3. Provision of specialist services to trauma patients where relevant.

      The post-holder will be required to undertake a TARN start-up course, network wide courses and to up-date their knowledge, they will be required to attend workshops on a variety of medical specialities. They will also need to complete mandatory training in relation to patient confidentiality and data protection.

      The post holder will offer specialist knowledge on and advice to individuals, clinical and multi-professional groups to facilitate the process of further, local project design, the appropriate systems and methodologies required.
